Default Bush Reading Program Ain't Done No Good

Says his own department of education findings.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/02/ed...02reading.html

Way to waste another billion dollars a year, jackass.

Oh, wait, there's more: the program was a boondoggle for conservative publishers.

That was revealed in 2006.

Once they had the reigns, the Democrats trimmed 60% off the program's budget.

I understand some people just don't like government, but why would you vote for people who say the government can't work, then spend more money than the other guys, on boondoggles, no less?

Another example of Bush actually being very liberal when it comes to spending.

I agree with the above poster Bush is a fiscal liberal and the republican congress of the first years of his administration were just as bad, if not worse, that's they didn't get reelected.

Yeah exactly...

In general im fiscally conservative, so naturally I want lower taxes and low government spending (there are a few issues I support government spending on though, and therefore im not always Conservative on fiscal issues.....Universal Health Care for Children for one)

However if your going to lower taxes...well thats fine. But you HAVE to keep spending low as well or else your going to get into trouble. I believe we are seeing the results of that in our nation.

If you plan on doing alot of spending, then make sure you have enough money coming in to foot the bill.

You cant have it both ways though. You cant spend alot and have no money coming in. Its just simple mathematics that if you put the two together it just doesn't work.

In real life if you go try to buy stuff without any money they will tell you to get lost. I guess in Government though you just invent some money or something lol.

“Reading First did not improve students’ reading comprehension,” concluded the report, which was mandated by Congress and carried out by the Department of Education’s research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences. “The program did not increase the percentages of students in grades one, two or three whose reading comprehension scores were at or above grade level.”
In other words, students whose reading comp were below average benefited from the program. Considering the number of students who read below their grade level in my district, virtually all of them, it sounds like it wasn't a total loss.

That is kind of funny...

I think it's weird what people expect from education initiatives. They expect that it should help all kids.

I think it's more that the kids most behind need the most help, the ones in the middle are doing fine as is, and the kids on top don't need any special help- they just need to be allowed to go on ahead!

Is also worth taking into consideration that not all children are going to take to a normal educational system and no matter how much money you dumb into the system, it will not change. Education starts at home, if parents aren't involved in a childs education, there is very little teachers/beaurocrats can do about it.
