I think you might have missed the sarcasm.

Anyway, Libertarians do believe in the inalienable right to property. However, Libertarians also believe in the prevention of monopolies. OPEC currently represents a near monopoly on petroleum resources. Witness the effect of their embargo. In a freer market system, this would have been economically disastrous for OPEC because they would have been simply forced out of the market and the price of oil would have only been moderately affected. The problem lies in the fact that OPEC is an international organization, and it is therefore hard to impose monopoly restricting regulations.

If military force is the only way to stop this monopoly, then it is necessary to the functioning of the world. Due to the incompetence of the UN, the US has to play this role in the world, and it should. But we should also recognize that the Iraq war was not about oil, it was about finding WMD.

he may have missed the sarcasm but you have not missed an opportunity to make the USA the world's policeman. and you assert that we are also entitled to take the oil of other for our own purposes under the disguise of ending a near monopoly. [how is something a near monopoly ... is that like being a little pregnant?]
so, when china becomes the dominent world power, i guess you will have no problem with it taking whatever assets it wants which happen to be held by another country ... gotta eliminate all of those near monopolies you know

It would be nice if the UN was competent enough to police the world, but it is not, and to hope for it is being hopelessly optimistic. OPEC is a near monopoly, and the results of its embargo prove it. Read the wiki article I posted a link to for more information, that's why I put it there. It is not like being a little pregnant. The conspiracy theory about Bush wanting to invade Iraq for its oil is a conspiracy, unless you have any evidence to support your theory. If China wants to help ensure a global free market, then let them help. And maybe the UN will eventually be able to function for itself.

It's about oil. It's all about oil. Our country is a junky for the stuff, and this president acts like junky-in-chief.

Holding hands with a frickin' authoritarian king. Selling him weapons. Whatever it takes.

And the stuff trickles in at a maximum profits to the despot.

While his subjects, who never see that wealth, plot to kill us.

Wouldn't a wiser investment be in alternative fuels? Isn't it time to try and detox?

Even if we fail to do it, the worst thing that happens is that we waste some money.

If we pick sides in a sectarian conflict in the greater middle east, it will cost us tons of money, there's no guarantee it will go our way, and when it's over, we're no better off than we were before.

Alternative energy is first and foremost a national security concern.

God Help Us if China develops something first.
