You can't just write off a nuclear Iran with the old mutually assured destruction thing. For a couple reasons.

For one they just might be crazy enough.

Barring that they could "lose" a nuke to some very bad people. Purely accidentally of course.

They could use a nuke tactically. If Iran just nukes, say, a carrier group do you see Obama declaring the destruction of millions of Iran civilians? Nope. And they know it too.

Finally they can start getting away with much more over operations against Israel, Iraq, and other neighbors. Certainly they'd use a nuke if somebody is already coming after them like we came for Saddam. Nothing to lose. Which means unless we want to be nuked we have to take that option, and probably a few others, off the table. I consider this the most likely scenario by far and there will be much bloodshed from it.

Iran fires Missiles, Republicans start screaming that something must be done, and go back to sitting in their recliners, expecting someone else to go do the fighting and the dying.
