Default Sex Offender Law Puts Nearly Everywhere Off Limits

Quote:
While many states and municipalities bar sex offenders from living near schools, Georgia's law, which takes effect July 1, prohibits them from living, working or loitering within 1,000 feet of just about anywhere children gather - schools, churches, parks, gyms, swimming pools or one of the state's 150,000 school bus stops.

That puts virtually every residential neighborhood off limits to Georgia's more than 10,000 registered sex offenders.

Lawmakers began working on the legislation last year following the arrests of two sex offenders in the slayings of two girls in neighboring Florida.

"We don't want these types of people staying in our state," state Rep. Jerry Keen said when he introduced the bill in January.

With the law about to take effect, a debate is under way over how tough is too tough.
I think this is too much. A registry is fine; I want to know if a sex offender is living in my neighborhood, but these people do need a place to live. They took their punishment; they did their time. Now they deserve a second chance. Can we all be mature enough to give them one?

BTW- I apology for no link. The computer I've been using won't allow me to copy url's off the top of the screen, but I found the article on AOL news.

So they don't mind all of their sex offenders piling up in Alabama or Florida then?
The dumbest thing about these kinds of laws is that they create a false sense of security.
For one thing, we don't know if offenders already prosecuted will repeat... especially when they're already registered.
The real danger is in offenders who have not been caught yet. Any sense of security about this is a false sense of security.
This is just a way for Georgia to keep its property values up after the sex offender registries started showing everyone where the convicted offenders lived.

And we all know they can't walk or drive to where kids are......

(Not to mention that most sex offenders, as defined under Georgia law, aren't pedophiles).

That's just it: many of them never did any time. If you go to your local on-line registry, you'll see that most get "probation" or "adjudicated probation." They need to stay home and away from our kids and grandkids.

They aren't pedophiles. I agree that PEDOPHILES should be kept from kids (although, once again, walking and driving are not exactly difficult to pull off). The vast majority of "sex offenders" in Georgia never touched a kid.

But here's a larger point: If I wanted to molest a child my address would not stop me. It's not like I would say, "well, since I live 1,005 feet from where kids might gather, I guess I'll just stop molesting".

These laws are designed to make it look like the government is trying to stop this sort of crime, but it's all BS. Thanks to the internet, sex offenders don't even have to leave their house to find victims.

Quote:
In Georgia’s Bibb County, which includes Macon and is about 85 miles south of Atlanta, most residential areas are within the buffer zones surrounding the county’s 4,700 school bus stops, according to the lawsuit. That means all but three of the county’s 230 registered offenders must move, the lawsuit says.

It seems like almost everywhere is off limits... this law pretty much ammounts to an ex-post facto law exiling sex offenders from georgia. if they're already served their time can you punish them again?

...

It says they're banned from living 1000 feet from a school and 1000 feet from a school bus stop... but schools usually don't have many bustops within about a mile or so of the schools, the kids that close just walk or bike. So does that mean we're going to have a big ring of sex offenders around schools, since the only place they're allowed to live is between 1000 and 4000 feet away from a school?

Default too broad

Not all sex offenders should be barred in this fashion, every state has different laws. In Arizona if you urinate in public that's you. Or if you had sex with a 15 year old when you were 17. Laws like these need to be tightened up. Another note, I'd support creating an "Escape from NY" for all child molesters. I think some island somewhere sounds good.

FYI, the 1,000 feet number comes from stats that say that molestations typically occur close to the offender's home. Not that they can't drive and commit those crimes elsewhere, just that they usually don't.

So in other words, they're using statistics as straight numbers instead of looking at the reasons behind them... It's like making a law that we have to get out of the car and walk when we get within a couple miles of home.
Won't they be surprised when the stats merely change to reflect mollestations occuring 1010 feet from mollesters' homes or when they discover the stats don't change, since a lot of potential mollesters have never acted and never been caught.
