Default Ham steak hate crime.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/mai...+--+Maine+news

Quote:
LEWISTON, Maine --Police are investigating as a possible hate crime an incident in which a ham steak was placed in a bag on a lunch table where a group of Somali students were sitting.

Quote:
Superintendent Leon Levesque said the incident is being treated seriously and police are investigating. The center for the Prevention of Hate Violence is working with the school to devise a response plan.
A response plan for a ham crime? This is why liberals get bashed so often. Grow a freakin' pair you candy-assed sissy.

This is definitely not the kind of thing where the police should be involved. The school should not tolerate immature pranks intended to offend minority students, but it's extreme to call it a "hate crime".
If the kids are caught, they should get the usual school-sanctioned punishment (a few days vacation )... It's up to the parents to punish them the rest of the way. Sad part is that the parents might not frown upon it... but it's not like getting the police involved is going to help anything.

This is preposterous. "The center for the Prevention of Hate Violence" is organizing a response to this?! Okay, pork is considered unclean by Muslims, so let's consider an equivalent (or even worse) insult to my Christian faith. Let us suppose I had a desk and some jerk put a drawing of Jesus or the Virgin Mary having relations with someone in it. I'd think that they were an obnoxious idiot, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to deal with it at all and I certainly wouldn't consider it a criminal matter. These are your tax dollars at work, ladies and gentlemen.

A hate crime means someone could be charged! For a ham steak. I realize this country is now a bunch of wimps and whiners, but this really takes the cake. They are having an intervention. The school sent letters out regarding its response plan. What the hell? The Stekim 2.0 response plan? Throw the ham out, insult the person who put it there and tell the Somaili's to find a real issue to get worked up about or the school cafeteria goes all pork.

Sure the kid was being an ass. Big fat hairy deal. Meanwhile, in Somalia people are being hacked to death. Either that or they just starve. But let's all focus on ham. Great idea.

I do think there is a place for the school (and parents, but can't control them) to be involved. These are kids and they are in an institution that theoretically is supposed to be civilizing them. Ill-natured pranks are not responsible adult behavior nor are they tolerable child behavior. The perpetrators should be punished if found, and even if not the school has a responsibility to denounce such actions and threaten punishment to future perpetrators.
But it should be called what it is: an ill-natured prank, an immature and malicious act... but not a "hate crime". The proper remedy is certainly not to pay for cops to catch them and then ruin their lives by putting them in juvy... It should be handled the same way any other such behavior is handled in school.

I'm far more offended at the response of both the Somali pansies and the Center for the Prevention of Hate and Violence. The prank was typical middle school bonehead. But he has an excuse. No so for the people responding.

True. It was pansious (is that a word? oh well, it is now). But typical middle-school boneheads should not be above punishment. They should be berated to some extent as to keep them from growing up into... high school boneheads.
I understand a school taking such crap seriously. Part of their job is to teach respect (because parents seem to be incompetent).
But it certainly doesn't help when it's blown to this proportion. In the end the bonehead will be seen as a hero by other boneheads and the only result will be kids getting ruined in jail for stupid pranks.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Car bombs exploded in Somalia's capital Tuesday and fighting raged for a seventh straight day
Quote:
Several large shipments of food for the tens of thousands of people who have fled Mogadishu have been turned back because there was no clearance from the Somali government, aid workers and diplomats said. The government has demanded to inspect all aid deliveries despite the worst humanitarian crisis in the country's recent history.
Quote:
A car bomb exploded outside the Ambassador Hotel, which is used by government lawmakers, said Somali presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamoud Hussein. Seven people were killed, said eyewitness Abdu-Kadir Mohamud.
Quote:
A suspected suicide car bombing injured three civilians outside an Ethiopian military base 18 miles from the capital, said resident Mayow Mohamed. Troops opened fire on the minibus as it sped toward the base, he said.
Quote:
The last seven days of clashes have killed 358 people, including at least 29 civilians and 36 insurgents who died Tuesday, according to Somalia's Elman Human Rights Organization.
Quote:
Bodies lay rotting on the streets for days — too dangerous to retrieve.

Quote:
A bid earlier this month to wipe out the insurgency left more than 1,000 people dead, many of them civilians.
Quote:
More than 320,000 Somalis have fled the capital since February, streaming to squalid camps with little to eat and no shelter. Tens of thousands of others remain trapped by the fighting.
Quote:
Soldiers at a military checkpoint outside Mogadishu turned back a World Food Program shipment that would have benefited 32,000 people because the government had not given clearance, Graham Farmer, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, said in an April 12 letter to Gedi.
Quote:
He also said at least one government-appointed regional governor "required payment for the transit of relief goods on top of payments already made to militia checkpoints. These practices are unacceptable and undermine the legitimacy of your government."
And in Maine, a bag containing ham was placed near several Somali's for a few seconds. Oh the humanity. THE HUMANITY.

Since these are minors, I suppose that adults do have to step in, but my solution would be roughly the same as stekim's.
