Default Welcome to Grant County, Oregon: A ‘U.N.-free Zone’

Welcome to Grant County, Oregon: A ‘U.N.-free Zone’
Last month, voters in this small eastern Oregon county of 7,800 residents carefully pondered two important ballot questions. No, they weren’t about increased funding for schools, balancing the budget, or even term limits. One called for banning the United Nations from the county; the other would permit residents to cut down trees on federal land without U.S. Forest Service approval.

Both measures passed overwhelmingly, with more than 50 percent of the county’s 4,684 registered voters casting their ballots.

I thought this was interesting , I for one can not stand the U.N and think it's a waste of our tax dollars

How big of them, to grant themselves the right to loot federal property.

And I'm guessing that the day after the vote, the U.N. presence in Grant County was the same it was the day before: zero.

What a waste of time and taxpayer money.

I realise it is about as important as the liberals in small towns who waste their time voting to impeach Bush.

I would like to applaud these small town voters for taking the initiative to help put these well-thought out plans in to operation as quickly as possible. Perhaps this will serve as a shining example of what initiative and direct democracy can do for all.

Sounds like a complete waste of time and money to me. I'd be surprised if anyone at the UN has ever even heard of Grant County, much less desires a presence there. As for the logging issue, the county government has no jurisdiction on federal land. People logging without permission will still be prosecuted by federal authorities.

Agreed. And only a bit more useless than towns that declare themselves nuclear-free zones.
