Yawn...
He's not dead. He's just in hibernation until Marvel decides to bring him back to cash in. Heroes dying in the mainstream Marvel Universe has become almost a cliche'. DC pulled the same crap with Superman. The only place where marvel heroes STAY dead is the "Ultimate" Universe. |

While he technically isnt superhuman, all of his abilities are the peak of what human beings are capable of. No human is faster, stronger or more agile. A lot of geeks like to debate who would win in a fight between him and Batman. The answer is, in a fist fight, Captain America would wipe the floor with him. Batman is exceptional, but Steve Rogers is literally as perfect as you can be (physically) and still be considered human. They've tried to replace him before and it didnt work well. Persoanlly, he isnt one of my favorite charatcers. But the Ultimate Universe version of him rocks. That version is a lot less milquetoast...he is what you would expect from a WWII era soldier. |

What was the deal with the Red Skull anyway? Obviously he was a commie and he was ugly... but did he actually have powers or just an unending army of goons like all the other supervillains?

Ah, that I did not know. I never read any Captain America comics (or the Avengers -- I think he was part of that group). I didn't really get into Marvel Comics as a kid, at the time I didn't care for the "soap opera" drama of heroes dating other heroes and their various psychological problems in coping with their abilities, etc. Hence, more kid-friendly DC.

Superman has died. I think Batman died(well got paralyzed) etc etc.

The only comic I liked him in was Captain America #367...which I bought when I was still collecting comics in 1990. It was during a crossover thing marvel was doing called "acts of vengence" where villains fought heroes they didnt usually fight or something. Magneto (a victim of the concentration camps) used the opportunity to beat the living snot out of the Red Skull. Magneto was always one of my faviorite anti-heroes, and the Red Skull was one of the villains I liked to hate the most. Magneto imprisoned him in a small underground room with only water for several weeks to force him to experience what the camps were like. Even though I almost never collected Captain America as a kid, that was still one of my favorite comics. It was a good issue. Quote:
The red Skull's thing was mostly lackeys, robots (and other minor technology) and his "dust of death". He smoked one of those fancy european type cigarettes all the time, and if you got close enough, he would blow through it and spew his "dust of death" all over you, and the poison would supposedly kill you. An oh-so-subtle analog to the gas chambers I assume. He tried it with magneto too. But his "magnetic force field" protected him. No, I do not know how a magnetic force field can protect you from non-magnetic gas, but apparently it can. Quote:
The Ultimate Universe is basically like an alternate reality of the mainstream marvel universe. It was created to showcase more believable analogs to mainstream marvel heroes. It's target demographic is people in their 30s and 40s who collected comics as a kid, but want more believable versions of them. The Ultimate characters are more like the ones you see in moves than the ones you see in mainstream comics. I dont collect comics now, but if I did, it would probably be from this series. Quote:

The soap-opera stuff was part of the appeal to me. DC (at the time anyway) seems kind of childish by comparison. The X-men were not gleaming icons like Superman...they had problems. Nightcrawler could teleport, but he looked like a freak. Cyclops could shoot beams from his eyes...but he couldnt turn it off. Rogue could absorb the powers and memories of anyone she touched, but she couldnt control it (and it drove her nutty every time she did it). Stuff like that. Phoenix is probably still my favorite character of any comic, and she was at the center of a lot of drama. I do admit the whole Cyclops/Jean Grey thing got really old. Quote:
