A few problems:

1. It's based on a sample of 143 journalists out of 100,000 or so in the country (using the article's broad definition of "journalist").

2. Many of the journalists in the sample don't cover politics or news. They're feature writers, sports writers, copy editors, opinion columnists, etc.

3. Since opensecrets only lists donations of more than $200, it misses the majority of donations, and skews toward more well-heeled donors.

4. They count the likes of Bill O'Reilly and Joe Scarborough as "journalists", when they're really opinion columnists, who have a clear and well-known bias. Similarly, the story prominently features writers for the New Yorker, which is not straight journalism by any stretch.

I think most newsrooms lean slightly left. But it's neither as far left, nor as much of an influence on coverage, as conservatives would like to believe in their quest for victimhood.

I think you're dead wrong, Raytri. The media can sway public opinion as the "left" does daily. It's why most people believe we cannot be successful in Iraq; why many people the economy is bad; and why many people believed the Republican had a "culture of corruption" last fall. The liberal media is the very important assistant to Democrats and their political power. And it's the VERY reason the likes of Hillary and others would LOVE to put Rush Limbaugh and other very strong opposing views off the air.

The left liked it BEST when there were NO choices.

Your examples assume that people will let the media "spin" override their own experience. That's kind of silly.

It's why most people believe we cannot be successful in Iraq;
Yeah, it would have nothing to do with the four years of failure and mismanagement, despite 3,000 America casualties, countless Iraqi ones and hundreds of billions of dollars. It would have nothing to do with the burgeoning sectarian war between a Shiite government (which, by the way, is developing a pretty good relationship with Iran) and Sunni separatists. Yeah, it's just media spin.

Quote:
Why many people the economy is bad;
Many people think the economy is bad because job growth hasn't kept up with the growth in the labor force, and for most people income has barely kept up with inflation, if that. Macroeconomic figures don't mean nearly as much as personal circumstances.

Quote:
Why many people believed the Republican had a "culture of corruption" last fall.
They did. It wasn't solely Republican, of course, but as the majority party they were engaged in some pretty indefensible activities. I happen to think it's a function of majority status, not party affiliation. The GOP came to power in 1994 because the Dems had grown fat and corrupt after years in power. By last year the roles had reversed. I have every faith that the Democrats will, in time, grow fat and corrupt again and be swept out by a rejuvenated GOP.

Quote:
The liberal media is the very important assistant to Democrats and their political power.
And yet the media have been pretty critical of the Dems now that they are in power. Maybe it's the media fulfilling its job to scrutinize those in power, rather than a particular party affiliation?

Quote:

Whatever. When I talk about the media, I don't mean people like Rush. And Hillary isn't the media, either. Never mind that many on the left think the mainstream media is too corporate and conservative and lapdoggish, so they would hardly prefer an environment where only the MSM existed.

I always got a kick out of Sam Donaldson denying the obvious bias of most of the media on This Week with David Brinkley.

I always get a vision of George Will snickering off camera when I read Raytri's denials of the palatable bias of today that makes the bias of that day look minor in comparison.

Default This should be in the conspiracy theory forum...

Yes, America is a nation of mindless drones unable to think for themselves. We have no opinions of our own.

Yeah, well, ray ha made some valid points that no one has yet to counter on this thread.

Your only valid point is that ray makes you hallucinate.

I don't feel the need to go through the effort of invaldating comments that are in reply to one study when they have been made in reply to just about every study.....and we're talking thousands of studies.

If you believe the media is not as overly bias as it clearly is then yes you are a mindless drone because its so obvious now-a-days that its like a brick being smashed in your face by a 800lb Gorilla.

To prove the bias takes only time and your willingness to read/watch the news while also noting how it is being delivered to you in words and actions.

The problem is that 99% of the media is liberally biased. No wonder the Commucrats love to hate FoxNews (then again, they love to hate a lot of things, don't they?). To them, FoxNews is biased, because it's the only major media outlet that's not a lapdog for the liberal agenda. Kinda like how "alternative" music became "mainstream," back in the 90's. "Biased" news is now the new "unbiased."

Boogie we tend to watch what is believable and it is obvious that people are turning to reality shows and same goes for political news. Republican rule has been the biggest blight to hit us at this turn of the century. People are aware that things are serious and we are walking on eggshells hoping that nothing else bad happens before January 2009 when we can finally change our country's path to runination and get it back on the surviving path again.
