Default Tough Times at New York Times: Circulation To Dip Below 1 Million

Source: http://americandigest.org/mt-archive...ed_to_deat.php
Quote:
Sometime, within the next twelve to eighteen months, the average circulation of the weekday edition of the New York Times will drop below one million. This event marks the continuing decline in the fortunes of what had been the U.S. newspaper of record as the New York Times' average circulation has been well above this level for decades.

Well, I guess people are throwing out the trash first in these hard economic times. People don't want to read slime, they want to read news. Ever since they started loving Barry, the circulation continues to dives. How low will it go?

maybe it's not the NYT's content but the industry that is in decline:

Quote:
...
New York Times shares slid 43 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $18.48 at 4:04 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, the lowest since January 1997. The stock has declined 24 percent this year.
Other newspaper stocks, including Gannett Co., owner of USA Today, and McClatchy Co., publisher of the Miami Herald, are also trading at 10-year lows because of the loss of advertising to new media such as the Internet and the decline in classified ads linked to tumbling housing sales. ...

Beautiful to behold - the death of a pillar of the lib media establishment - the big city liberal monopoly newspapers, and replaced with a level playing field - the net. Two of the great things about the internet:

1. Its negative impact on the lib media, and

2. The fact that finally there is a medium uncontrollable by libs, the thought police of america.

I don't like the NY Times and in many ways smile at its demise. However, unfortunately people are going to even less reliable outlets like the "US was behind 9/11" and "The Clintons murdered Foster" websites.

there is no "mostly unique;" thats like saying "sometimes always," its an oxymoron - its either one or the other.

The result:

By the mid-19th century unique had developed a wider meaning, “not typical, unusual,” and it is in this wider sense that it is compared. The comparison of so-called absolutes in senses that are not absolute is standard in all varieties of speech and writing.

Reb is onto something here...

As the ivory towers of information fall, it is replaced by regular folks, almost all of whom have an agenda.

On one hand, people can find the news they want to hear.

On the other hand, there is a case to be made that people need the news they don't want to hear, most of all.

PBS has a great documentary on the subject: Newswar.

For those of you on the right, I'd skip parts 1 and 2, since you don't really care how the administration spun the news...

Part III, however, explains why hard, rigorous news, is in trouble.

Hard, rigorous news has been in trouble for at least 40 years. And it's worse that we hear lots of people with an agenda, instead of one group, liberals, with an agenda? Not hardly.

Lies simply don't sell very well as long as people are able to access truth! Why should anyone pay for lies when he can have truth for free?
