Angry Just plain sick: Michael the Savage Weiner and Autism

Quote:
The radio program of conservative "shock jock" Michael Savage has been canceled by one Mississippi network following his controversial claim that autism is almost always the result of "a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out."

"They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron," Savage went on during his July 16 broadcast. "You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. ... Don't act like a girl. Don't cry."

"It was just horrible what he said," stated Steve Davenport, president of Telesouth Communications, in explaining the cancelation. "When you talk about people in politics, business people, that's one thing. But when you talk about defenseless children, that's another."

Some parents of autistic children want Savage to be fired entirely. Evelyn Ain, who organized a protest outside the studios of WOR-AM in New York on Monday, explained, "That isn't just freedom of speech, it is hateful speech." Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association called Savage's remarks "over the line and cruel."

"It's heartbreaking," one protesting parent told CNN. "The whole lives of families change in raising a child with autism." Martin Schwartzman's 15-year-old son Robbie is moderately autistic. "It really hurt my feelings," said Robbie's twin sister Allyson.

However, law professor Nate Persily cautioned, "The Constitution protects your right to be a jerk sometimes. ... Jerky speech is protected."

Savage was previously fired by MSNBC in 2003 over anti-gay comments. At the time of writing, an online petition calling for his firing over the latest flap had already gained 1600 signatures.

However, a statement posted on Savage's website Monday offered no apology but insisted that autism is being overdiagnosed by greedy doctors, a statement with which Persily disagrees.
What a complete putz that man is. My oldest son has been diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder just this last month. We've been pulling our hair out trying to help him. Now we're finally getting some answers and some treatments that are already showing results -- and then this fraud has the guts to hide behind his microphone and call my son's condition fake?

<<< Mod Edit: Threats like this are not allowed on this board >>>

People who call autism "fake" or "over-diagnosed" are lazy parents. Raising an autistic child is ten times tougher than for normal kids, and these clowns who brush off reality just can't be bothered to make the effort. They would rather abuse children than help them become good people. So be it.

But I think they don't deserve a microphone and a syndication deal.

I refuse to defend his comments because I disagree 100%. But the show is for entertainment purposes and if saying crazy bs like this gets people to tune in and listen to ads, then mission accomplished.

What he needs to ask himself though is, do the means justify the ends?

Just change the dial to another radio station, or write his advertisers.

He gets paid to stir the pot.

Yeah. Somebody has to sponsor this crap. Any sponsor who buys an ad for this kind of "humor" shouldn't get my business. Of course the problem is that syndication seems to be less expensive to produce than local programming.

In Louisville, they fired the local talk show guy who had been on the air for 10+ years discussing local issues and replaced him with Savage's show. I'm sure somebody likes this kind of humor. I think they call this market, the stupid people demographics. Thank goodness there is internet, satelite and Public radio.

There seems to be one thing that is over-diagnosed by Weiner and the rest of the neo-con pundits:liberalism. I am surprised the Weiner didn't claim autism was the result of being liberal. The 1st amendment protects Weiner from prosecution for his words (as it should), but keeping one's job is quite another thing. I've been fired for saying words far less offensive than that.

Write to him, write to the station owners, write to the FCC. If enough people do that, they will fire his ass.

In my perfect world, the Savage Wiener would be forced to care for a dozen autistic children for a month. Of course, in my perfect world, nobody would have to suffer from autism.

So I listened to the show today and watched the various clips all over the internet. It's not so much shame on Michael Savage. It's shame on you for posting this cut & paste mess that is taking his words out of context or shame on the source that you pulled this from for the same reasons.

He is defending children from being over medicated. He wasn't saying that Autism doesn't exist, but that it is over diagnosed and it is, just like many diseases. I mean I look back at when I was in school and from how I acted I could have been diagnosed with autism or ADD, but luckily I have, what Dr Savage and Dr Breggin both point out that is lacking in most diagnosed people, involved parents. Bad parenting is a key factor in all these things - most parents are either uninformed on the dangers of the medication given to children or are willing to let meds be the parent and subdue their children. I am not saying these diseases don't exist, but not at the level that we see today. I had more to say, but I have had a long day and I am tired.

I love how you all jumped to a false conclusion.

re you sure about that, R.N.?

If the world were truly perfect, it would be an incapacitated Savage left in the care of a dozen autistic children.

I think what he's trying to say is that, while there are autistic children, some cases are poorly diagnosed, or diagnosed out of convenience. How many children are diagnosed with ADHD, when it's probably poor or weak parenting? How many children are diagnosed with eating disorders, when it's the parents who allow their children to vegetate in front of their XBox's?

Personally Robo, I think you're overreacting to one person's opinion, who happens to use that opinion as entertainment value for others.
