I noticed your DP, mosaic of the Byzantine Emperor; Find it odd...

That figures. I idn't see anything like that in the hagia sophia - but I remember reading that Ravenna is the best place for byzantine mosaics.

I suspect that may be part of a very famous piece of work which was done in honour of Justinian and Theodora in the 6th century. Am I right?

I must go to Ravenna next time I go over your way!

Your avatar is very Byzantine. I am thinking it is an emperor (I guess could be a saint) is it from the hagia sophia?

      thank you!

I have been to quite a number of places in Turkey, and it was interesting to me to see these places which I had read about - and see the remains from ancient cultures still there.

I have also read quite a lot about the Byzantine era, which has often been ignored as well by a lot of modern readers.

      that forum looks really interesting!

no - I was in Turkey on ANZAC day but never went there because I didn't go to Turkey to hang out with other Aussies. I would probably be more interested in seeing Troia than Gallipolli, as I am interested in the ancient world.

I am also interested in Turkey because it has for so long been a crossroads of many civilisations, and has a rich cultural tapestry because of this. It is also a very diverse country - especially geographically.

I think it may be my favourite country for a whole range of reasons.

      we have a long history

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."

I saw Breath's comment - and I remembered hoşgeldinez used to be the first thing I saw when I turned on a computer in Turkey - so ... I knew it was welcome. :)
