Default Portugal closes Baghdad embassy

Quote:
Portugal is closing its embassy in Baghdad because of security concerns, the foreign minister said Friday.
Quote:
Embassy staff were "at constant risk of being killed," he said. The Portuguese ambassador to Iraq is already back in Lisbon. Portugal will reopen its embassy when security can be assured, Amado said.

Yet another indictment of the mishandling of the occupation now in its fourth year.

With Al-Sadr now calling for his followers to `oppose`, rather than `not co-operate with` the occupying forces, Shia protests against US bases, increased attacks against coalition forces in Diyala province and British withdrawal from Basra Iraq looks as unstable now as ever. Yes, Surgee.

Default portugal is not a rich nation.

The Portuguese government has closed its embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad because of poor security and high financial costs, Foreign Minister Luis Amado told the press on Thursday.

It was the cost Johnderondon, every thing has been going well since the surge but the cost made them do it.

The Portuguese government has closed its embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad because of poor security and high financial costs, Foreign Minister Luis Amado told the press on Thursday.

Amado said he had sent a letter to his Iraqi counterpart Hostiar Zebari to inform him of the decision and reiterated his nation's "firm support" for Iraq's reconstruction.

Until security in Baghdad has improved, Portugal will deal with its relations with Iraq via its ambassador in Lisbon, who will also cover other Gulf States, Amado said.

In support of the ambassador, Portugal will keep an office open in the foreign embassies section of Baghdad's security area, the Green Zone.

The ambassador to Iraq, Francisco Falcao Machado, has already left Baghdad. The 14 Portuguese police officers who have guarded the embassy will leave by the end of this month.

The ministry said the exit from Iraq is part of a restructuring of its embassies overseas. It has also closed the embassy in the Philippine capital Manila, and opened new embassies in the Libyan capital Tripoli and Lebanese capital Beirut.

Default i dont get it.....

so they are abandoning their embassy offices but leaving one open with so many gaurds there until what?

"In support of the ambassador, Portugal will keep an office open in the foreign embassies section of Baghdad's security area, the Green Zone."

so the implication is that they had embassy offices open outside of the Green Zone. I'm surprised the UN allows this.

Default ??

Whats the UN have to do with anything?

UN's practically a non-entity in Iraq...and Portugal is a sovereign state it doesn't get dictated to about Embassy placement by the UN or anyone but the host nation.

Simply put ..

Security at their Embassy location was deemed inadequate and the cost of maintaining the current embassy was too high so they withdrew their embassy staff and put a liason office inside the green zone.

..and this was construed by John as some sort of they are running OMG the SURGE failed!..or whatnot...why or how that works who knows.

The ambassador will be in Lisbon Portugal, his man in Iraq will be in the Green Zone. The embassy was in the Green Zone but things have been going so well that the Ambassador had little to do so to cut costs he is going to work out of Lisbon.
