Default Why does the US governent support Saudi Arabia?

Why does the US government still support Saudi Arabia? I can see why Franklin Delano Roosevelt initially formed a relationship with the new ruler of the Arabian Peninsula. King Saud needed protection for his newly acquired oil wealth and the US needed oil and security in the region. So the US gave the Saudis weapons and they gave us cheap crude. Sixty years later I ask this question. What have the Saudis ever done for us except for providing the majority of the 9/11 hijackers? Why does US Middle Eastern policy involve protecting the Saudis and ensuring their position in the region at the expense of taxpayer dollars and US military casualties. Is it a choice of the lesser of two evils? I guess we rather back the radical Islamic Wahhabis than a nuclear wielding Iran. Is our Middle Eastern policy creating security or turmoil?
