Icon14 Saudi Arabia arrests 28 militants

Quote:
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Police have arrested 28 militants suspected of trying to rebuild the al-Qaida network in Saudi Arabia and start a terror campaign in the kingdom, the government said Monday.

Police had found a message from Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaida's No. 2 leader, on the memory card of one of the men's mobile phones, urging the militants to collect money for needy families in Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry. The staff at the official Saudi Press Agency, which carried the ministry's statement, said al-Zawahri's message was an audio recording.

The ministry quoted the message as saying that its bearer was "'a trusted brother.'"

"'Please give him your cash donations to the families of prisoners ... in Pakistan and Afghanistan,'" said the message.

Quote:
Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Osama bin Laden, has been waging a heavy crackdown on militants since al-Qaida's branch in the country launched a wave of attacks in 2003, including suicide bombings and shooting attacks on compounds of international companies and oil infrastructure that killed several dozen Saudis and foreigners. At least 11 Americans were among the dead. By 2006, security forces appeared to have largely crushed the campaign, arresting or killing most of its known leaders.

There have been no major attacks since February 2006, when suicide bombers tried but failed to attack an oil facility at Abqaiq. But arrests have continued. In April 2007, 172 militants were detained in one of the biggest sweeps, including pilots allegedly trained to carry out attacks on oil refineries using civilian planes.

Default Let's invade

This is evidence that Al Qaeda is in Saudi Arabia... isn't this the criteria for occupying the entire country until they all can be eliminated....

We don't do that when the government there cracks down on them. Not sure if the Saudis would always be our allies but for now they are.

On that note I recall that they ran radio ads after 9/11 along the lines of "Saudi's don't hate americans, we're sorry for your loss. Etc."

Saudi Arabia has been a good close ally of the USA for 18 years now.
They're continued success against al Qaeda Terorist in their nation is good news.

"Members of a Saudi Arabian anti-terrorist troop march on during a military parade for hajj security outside Islam holy city Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Jan. 15, 2005."

The naysayers here are not worth their weight in salt.

What was the nationality of those highjackers that were responsible for 9/11?

Where they Iraqi?

To bad the Saudis didn't arrest them before they got to America.

I guess that's where these boards have actually been relevant to me. Previously I would have figured a statement like that was just a baseless jab.

But, no. Pretty much anytime something bad happens to terrorists they do seem bitter or something and will take a swipe at something else.

Default It's Saudi Arabia ...

It's Saudi Arabia. Most of us liberals aren't very fond of it. Personally, I regard them as the source of a lot of trouble for America. I think they're much closer in connection to Al Qaeda than Afghanistan or especially Iraq have ever been. Plus, that country is rough on civil liberties and especially women to a degree that makes other countries in the region seem pretty modern by comparison.

They seem more like the allies of guys like Bush and Cheney and other oily fatcats than they are actually any kind of ally to America or its people.

Basically, Saudi Arabia dealing with Al Qaeda is kind of like Bush dealing with Saddam -- it's like management dealing with an unruly employee.
