The old regime of which country? Iran? Iraq? Saudi Arabia?
Iraq.

As I said, I think Iran is a threat to peace and stability in Iraq, but there are a number of others, that are arguably equal.

And while I agree, the house of saud can't be blamed for every action of their citizenry, our mutual relationship with the house of saud is the reason their citizenry hates us.

This is exactly why "with us/against us" binary logic shouldn't apply in many cases. It's much more complicated than that.

Another case is Pakistan.

How much control did Iran have in Iraq before we showed up on the scene?

Iran was one of Iraq's prime enemies, they've been fighting forever over there. Forever meaning around 5,000 years, we're not quite sure before this, but they might have been throwing rocks at eachother, who knows?

Iran is not dangerous to the US, how many times do we need to go over this? They are only a threat to US interests (Iraq) which is the reason we are afraid of them. If we hadn't gone to war with Iraq (and Iran fought them) we would see them as heroes for attacking the Huessein regime.
