Default Iranian parliament chooses Larijani as speaker

at last, a change.

Quote:
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's newly-elected parliament picked one of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's potential rivals in next year's presidential election for the influential post of speaker on Sunday, official media reported.

Ali Larijani, who quit as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator last year citing differences with Ahmadinejad over how to handle the country's atomic dispute with the West, received a clear majority of 237 votes in the 290-member legislature.

He was beaten in the 2005 presidential race but analysts expect him to run again in 2009. They say he may become a rallying point for conservative MPs who oppose the president's economic policies and his fiery speeches against the West.

"Obviously the Majles (parliament) wanted a stronger speaker, someone who can stand up to Ahmadinejad," said one Iranian analyst, who declined to be named.

Larijani himself made clear his intention of creating a more active role for parliament with him as speaker.

"We are looking for ways of more carefully supervising the country's affairs," state television quoted him as saying. "We are also after looking for a mechanism to resolve differences between the legislative branch and other branches."

Larijani's election as speaker was widely expected after conservatives, who retained their majority in a March parliamentary election, overwhelmingly backed his candidacy at an internal meeting last week.

Hopefully the ayatollah will back him in the next election. Hopefully this guy will be more open to talking as opposed to shouting extremist rhetoric to help his ailing government get reelected.

The BBC once had an article on the incumbent president and the reporter drew comparisons to Ahmadinejad when he was in control of Tehran' roads and traffic. The reporter argued that the traffic in Tehran was awful and used it as a testament to Ahmadinejad's leading skills.

he's a moderate conservative. this also shows the new sight between conservatives (the majority of parliament). they want a change in government's politics. parliament chose Larijani with 237 in favor, 22 blank ballots and no opposite vote.

Israel has been invaded 5 times by multiple Arab countries, and defeated them every time. You should learn your lesson not to invite pain and suffering on yourselves (plus further embarrassment) by picking on innocent Jews because of racial hatred.

The West is the Middle Easts best friend, and has stopped aggression from Iraq, Iran, and given them hope for a better future.

You are deluded! The West is the worst enemy of the Middle East.

Israel only has to lose ONE time. So Muslims will NEVER quit trying.

When Israel falls.

We saved you from Saddam twice, and have brought democracy and freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan, for the very first time.

Your hatred consumes you. Israel will destroy you if you push them too far.

The world will be appalled at the billion radioactive Muslim puddles left over from Israel defending itself from your attempt at genocide.

Give up your hatred. Live and let live.
