Is Palestine Still the Arab World's Conscience?
During the period of intense pan-Arab Nationalism in the late 1950s that led to the formation of the United Arab Republic between Syria and Egypt, amongst other things, There was a strong sense that the Palestinian struggle to reclaim their homeland was also a wider, Arab struggle. This is what led to the wars in 1967 and 1973, and the continual support of Palestinian militant organisations.
However, lately Arab countries have been more concerned with themselves than with the notion of pan-Arabism, let alone Palestine. We can see this in the first Gulf War, as the rest of the Arab world stood aside as Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, just as they stood aside when the US kicked him out. It can also be seen in the ongoing power struggle in Lebanon by Syrian interests.
So is pan-Arabism dead? Is Palestine still the conscience of the Arab world, or is it largely on its own now?
