Arrow We’ll host Russian missile system - Syria

Hello, Israel...

Syria says it’s ready to put a Russian missile system on its soil as a counterweight to U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic. The offer was made during a meeting between Syrian leader Bashar Asad and President Dmitry Medvedev in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Meanwhile, Moscow is considering a request from Syria for more Russian-made weapons.
It was the first meeting between the two leaders, and President Al-Asad was keen to show Syria’s support for Russia.

"We understand what is behind Russia's position ... We believe this is a response to Georgian provocation. We support Moscow in this and are against any attempts to blacken Russia," Al-Assad said.

Many expected a tit-for-tat response after the US sealed a deal to deploy interceptors in Poland as a part of their missile defence system.

Ahead of the visit, there were reports that Russia might deploy a missile system in Syria - in particular, the Iskander system. It’s something Syria has been requesting for a long time. After Friday’s meeting, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia is ready “to consider the offers of the Syrian government in connection of the delivery of new weapons, only for defence purposes”.

Moscow has temporarily suspended cooperation with NATO. It follows NATO’s criticism of Russia’s actions in South Ossetia and threats to shut down the NATO-Russia Council. Lavrov was clear on Russia’s course: “We are not going to slam the door on NATO. NATO could slam this door, though. Everything depends on NATO's priorities: if the priorities are absolutely supportive of Saakashvili's bankrupt regime to the detriment of partnership with Russia, then it is not our fault,” he said.

Russian President Medvedev phones Olmert to affirm ties

In an atmosphere of heightened tensions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday night to affirm the ties between the two countries.

...

The conversation came after Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in Russia Wednesday for a two-day visit during which he is seeking to purchase weapons, including long-range anti-aircraft missiles. Assad has reportedly offered to allow Moscow to deploy Russian Iskander missiles in its territory. The Iskander (known by NATO as the SS-26 Stone) is a short-range, solid fuel-propelled missile system.

Russia has reportedly not taken him up on the offer, which was publicized on Wednesday, the same day the United States signed an agreement with Poland to place a defensive missile system on Polish soil

So your country's "retaliation" for a defensive missile interception system that can't even threaten your nuclear deterance is to put an offensive nuclear capable system near the border of a country that isn't even a member of NATO...

Are you guys high?

I ask again NPR, why is Russia so scared of 10 intercepters that can't even hurt your missiles and that you have 1000 times the amount needed to overwhelm anyways?

PS: You do realize that Israel can hit Syria with nuclear artillery or nap-of-the-earth nuclear equipped fighter strikes that totally invalidate this, right?

Edit: Correction, the Iskander isn't even nuclear capable, so this comes down to "who gives a (*)(*)(*)(*)?"

Alright! So are good friends in Syria will get the Iskander too...

Iskander SS-21 / Scarab/Tochka
Iskander E (SS-26 Stone)

The Iskander Tactical Missile System is considered to be among the most advanced surface / surface missiles available today.

Iskander-E is the export version of the Iskander M (9M72) short-range ballistic missile currently in service with the Russian Armed Forces (known by NATO designation SS-26).

An earlier version is the SS-21 Tochka/Scarab, which was extensively used by the russian Army during the 2nd Chechnya war and during the conflict between Russia and Georgia in August 2008. The missile is designed for mobile, autonomous operation and is capable of striking point and area targets at ranges of 50 – 280 km. (The M version is believed to have a range of 400 km). Typical missions include the engagement of enemy fire support, such as MLRS and long range artillery, air defenses and missile defense assets, airfields, command, control and communications nodes and infrastructure targets.

The Iskander-E missile is a single stage, solid fuel missile weighing 3.8 tons, carrying a payload of 480 kg. it can be loaded with cluster, blast-fragmentation or penetration warheads. A Thermobaric warhead is also believed to be part of the missile's warhead options. An unconventional warhead could also be an option, including a tactical nuclear warhead.

It's cool. Just ignore me and keep cheerleading about your missile systems, but I can do the same.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_missile

Quote:

The Arrow "Interceptor" (Hebrew: טיל חץ‎, /til xɛts/) ABM is a theater missile defense (TMD) system; it is the first missile developed by Israel that was specifically designed and built to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles on a national level. The Arrow intercepts its targets high in the stratosphere (some systems, such as RIM-161, are intended to intercept in outer space; others, such as PAC-3, are designed to meet their targets in lower atmosphere). Lockheed Martin's THAAD also intercepts ballistic missiles in the high stratosphere, but also has the capability to intercept targets in outer space.

Development
The Arrow project got underway after the U.S. and Israel agreed to co-fund it on May 6, 1986.[3]. The Arrow ABM system was designed and constructed in Israel with financial support by the United States and Israel in a multi-billion dollar development program (said to be $2 billion USD to date). The Israeli Ministry of Defence runs the Arrow development project under the name "Minhelet Homa", which binds together Israel's different security industries (such as Israel Military Industries, Tadiran, Israel Aerospace Industries, etc.). The system was first developed in the late 1980s.

On July 29, 2004, Israel and the United States carried out a joint test flight in the USA in which the Arrow was launched against a real Scud missile. The test was a success, with the Arrow destroying the Scud with a direct hit. In December 2005 the system was successfully tested again in a firing against a replicated Scud C as Shahab-3 missile. This test success was repeated on February 11, 2007.

Following the July 2004 tests, the Defense Minister of Israel, Shaul Mofaz, said "this is a central plank of Israel's defense ability. The success of the test is further proof of the technological superiority of the Israeli Defense Industries".

Specifications
The ABM system is meant to intercept medium- and short-range ballistic missiles and was designed with an eye towards the current advanced missile programs of Iran and the former threat of Iraq under Saddam Hussein. The system is built around the Arrow missiles, the "Yellow Citron" (Citron Tree) control system and the IAI EL/M-2080 "Green Pine" radar target tracking system. In actual use, the system would be aided by American Defense Support Program satellites that can detect and report the flare as missiles are launched. The first operational system was deployed in central Israel, at the Palmachim IAF Base on the Mediterranean coast, on March 14, 2000. The latest missile is known as the Arrow II and is still being evaluated for improvement.

The Arrow system is controlled by an officer who can evaluate the trajectory and decide if one of the advanced Arrow missiles should be launched. There are six missile tubes in each launcher, and each missile can be launched to a separate target. Confirmation of this and other abilities was demonstrated in a recent test — the 10th for the Arrow interceptor and the 5th for the complete system — when four of the six missiles were launched at virtual targets during joint U.S.-Israeli exercises.

The Arrow 2 interceptor itself has a speed of more than 3 km/s; as opposed to purely kinetic weapons it has its own explosive warhead, allowing it to miss by 40–50 meters and still kill its target.

Oh look, Medvedev is running things again. What the hell happened to Putin?

Its like Amos and Andy over there. Just back and forth, back and forth.

So if Syria can have missiles, then there is nothing wrong with Poland having them right?

I just love a good arms race!

I am ok with that. Russia can build as many missile shields as they want. More power to em.

Apparently not best enough to defend against a US missile "attack". Otherwise, why is russia so concerned about US defense missile in Poland?

You really dont see the contradiction there?

Now where did I hear that quote "good offence is best defence"? oh yea, the bushists.... now back to reality, don't you find it strange that the biggest offender in recent history is interested in planting 'defence' systems around Russia?

No. Not even a little bit. If Russia was our target, why would we put such a flimsy defense in place against them? In a MAD situation against Russia, the missile defense system might as well not exist.
