Testament was actually the band that launched me into metal. I grew up listening to Ozzy, Dio, Scorpions, UFO, and others, but it wasn't until I heard the following song that I decided to jump head first into the genre.

I don't have a problem with metalcore, though - I don't see why some people see it as being so 'unmetal'.

Metalcore is this generations metal knockoff. A few years ago it was "Nu-metal" with Korn, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, and the rest of those kinds of bands. Back in the 80's it was hair metal. I dislike these genres because they take the style of real metal and they infuse a bunch of crap into it to make it more commercially palatable to the mainstream. These bands start making a ton of money, and it sometimes causes good bands to stray away from real metal.

Take a look at what happened to In Flames because of the explosion of metalcore.

Same here, it's still easily identifiable as metal, and plenty of it sounds really good.

The only time I start doubting metal credentials, is when a band starts aggressively adding punk/ska, hip hop/electronica, or begins to sound contemporary 'hard rockish'.

I think Testament is a bit underrated. I think I'd rather listen to random Testament songs vs random Metallica/Slayer/Megadeath songs.

Very few of the 2nd wave thrash bands even came close to the success that some of the 1st wavers enjoyed. It makes sense, though. By the time Testament's first album released in 1987, thrash was already at its peak, and had nowhere to go but down, and it went down fast in less than 4 years. Some of Testament's contemporaries are bands like Heathen, Forbidden, Vio-lence, Defiance, Atrophy, and many many others. None of these bands really came close to the mainstream, but they enjoyed success within the genre.

Megadeth is one of my favorite bands, but I definitely agree with what you are saying. Most of Metallica's "classic" stuff simply bores me, nowadays. Maybe I've listened to it too much, but a lot of their stuff is too long, too repetitive, and it just doesn't have very good replay value. As for Slayer, I only like their first several albums. Anything after that wasn't really that great, in my opinion.

It doesn't bother me. There have always been these new trends that come, get hated, and then gradually integrate into the whole scene and become accepted, but I think you need some of that to keep things fresh and stop it all becoming stale and samey. A bit of a new angle on things can give people something different to work with and blend into their style, which is good.

Without metalcore, and the following developments that blended it with prog rock and metal ideas of musicianship and experimentation, we wouldn't have interesting stuff like this:
