I've never liked Pantera. A glam metal band who woke up one day and decided they wanted to become bad asses with their simplistic sound. Their style led to terrible bands like Hatebreed forming, who in turn inspired thousands of (*)(*)(*)(*)ty metalcore bands that now pollute the metal genre.

    (*)(*)(*)(*) PANTERA!

Isn't Phil a cutie with his hair like that? Look at those pouting lips!

This one blew me away the first time I heard it. I remember paying $60 for this album at the time because it was long out of print and only rarely appeared on eBay.

Here, leftlegmoderate. If you have to listen to a reformed glam band... listen to Hexx (You're welcome, in advance)

This is a first for me! I've never met a metal fan who dislikes Pantera.

As for the glam thing, I think that was a fabricated image, a product of the time. At least they broke free from that and went their own way. While being influenced by Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, they did their own thing, and stayed pretty true to that even while bands they'd influenced started taking things in a far different direction. Also, I think they deserve some credit for helping as a counter balance to grunge. Pantera turned a lot of people on to metal, and helped the music survive.

Dime was one of the all time greats. I still can't believe that idiot in Ohio murdered him.

I really started getting into Pantera after they developed their own distinctive sound. Damageplan had potential, too...

Really? There are many metalheads who dislike Pantera. I think even a good number of Pantera fans (besides the ones who gush over them) can at least admit they are overrated. Dimebag was a decent guitarrist, but he isn't a metal god or one of the greatest guitar players of all time like his fans make him out to be. "Walk"? That has to be one of the dumbest metal songs ever written. Dull, boring, repetitive, yet insanely popular. That is pretty much how I feel about almost all of Pantera's work.

It wasn't just an image, though. They didn't just change their looks, they changed their whole identity as a band. They even stopped playing their older songs. It's like they pretended that their pre-Cowboys days never even happened. I feel like their tough guy era was more of a fabricated image designed to fill some sort of niche. It was a very successful move for them, I'll give them that, but I've never been convinced by it.

I've never been a huge Pantera fan myself. They were OK, but definately hugely overrated, in my opinion - I never got what was so wonderfully important or original about them.
