Thread: Hi All

  1. Default Hi All

I'm new here, looking for other moderates/centrists struggling to pick a prez candidate in the US election this fall (and trying not to incur the wrath of both sides in the process, lol). You seem to have an interesting mix of ideologies and interesting thinkers here. I haven't done political discussion in many, many years so I'm looking forward to it.

An undecided, centrist voter in a swing state. Which way do I vote? You tell me.
    - We need a balanced budget, but we won't get there without entitlement cuts AND a tax increase.
    - We need a secure border AND an amnesty program.
    - We're going to have gay marriage AND religion in this country, and neither is going to destroy us.
    - We need gun rights AND gun control.
So you tell me: Which of the two candidates is the only clear choice for the ideological belief set listed above?

Welcome, Pangloss. Please let us know when you find a Democrat who supports a balanced budget AND entitlement cuts and we'll all become moderate centrists.

Hope you enjoy your stay here... look forward to reading your posts.

Hi, and welcome Pangloss (what does Pangloss mean?)

I am the forum enfant terrible, that is to say that I am not an American who occasionally dares to comment upon American politics/sociology, the Israeli state, US foreign policy, and religion in general.

I hope to have interesting discussions with you.
I hate the idea of causes, and if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country. E.M. Forster

Hi Leo2. Pangloss is from Voltaire's Candide. I have a rather Leibnizian view of politics in democracies. A controversial law may be "the best possible solution" to a problem once you factor in the level of disagreement itself. Examples (good and bad) include Obamacare, the US Patriot Act, ongoing budget disagreements, the politics behind entering the Libyan revolution, etc. My signature lists a few more.

I am generally an advocate of realpolitik over the traditional partisan ideologies of "liberal" and "conservative".
