Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, has said his country is ready to start "serious talks" with six world powers on Wednesday.
Earlier, Iran gave its formal response to the demand by the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany to suspend uranium enrichment. It has not yet revealed whether it will to do so in exchange for incentives. Tehran has until the end of the month to suspend uranium enrichment or face possible UN sanctions. However, Iran made it clear on Monday that it would reject global pressure. Although Iran's chief negotiator has said that Iran is ready for "serious talks", what the members of the Security Council need to know is whether Iran is willing to suspend uranium enrichment by 31 August as demanded by the council, says the BBC News website's world affairs correspondent, Paul Reynolds. If it is not or gives no clear response on this, the US and its allies will take it as a "no" and will press for sanctions, though these would need a separate council decision. Mr Larijani handed a written response to the envoys representing the US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany, Iranian television reported. "Although there is no justification for the other parties' illegal move to refer Iran's case to the Security Council... the answer was prepared... to pave the way for fair talks," he was quoted by Iran's student news agency ISNA as saying. Iranian officials had previously said Tuesday's response would address ambiguities over its right to nuclear technology.

That's a good one. Yeah, the sanctions will be meaningless since China and Russia will be the first ones to violate them, unless the sanctions are watered down and meaningless like the ones imposed on North Korea.
