Photos show cleansing of suspect Syrian site

By William J. Broad and Mark Mazzetti Published: October 25, 2007

New commercial satellite photos show that a Syrian site believed to have been attacked by Israel last month no longer bears any obvious traces of what some analysts said appeared to have been a partly built nuclear reactor.

Two photos, taken Wednesday from space by rival companies, show the site near the Euphrates River to have been wiped clean since August, when imagery showed a tall square building there measuring about 150 feet on a side.

The Syrians reported an attack by Israel in early September; the Israelis have not confirmed that. Senior Syrian officials continue to deny that a nuclear reactor was under construction, insisting that Israel hit a largely empty military warehouse.

But the images, federal and private analysts say, suggest that the Syrian authorities rushed to dismantle the facility after the strike, calling it a tacit admission of guilt.

"It's a magic act — here today, gone tomorrow," a senior intelligence official said. "It doesn't lower suspicions; it raises them. This was not a long-term decommissioning of a building, which can take a year. It was speedy. It's incredible that they could have gone to that effort to make something go away."

Very interesting. I'm quite sure sometime in the future, we're learn much more about this.

BTW, isn't this valley in Syria where some experts and officials....including Saddam's #2 guy---claimed that Iraq wmd's went to weeks before the war began?

I think Isreal has the right idea. What are they going to do, complain about a bombing an empty building.

I don't understand why we just don't do that to Iran, long range bunker busting missiles to their nuclear reactors. We know where they all are.

That would set them back a few years. Screw sanctions, lets just toss out a few bombs.

We can even give them 48 hour advance notice to avoid civilian casualties.

So your answer to diplomacy is destruction and preempting strikes of sovereign nations in the ME. Or is there a declared war sanctioned by the UN? Building a nuclear reactor is not a crime the last time I looked, or I would be a criminal. Israels day is coming.

Some how I am not surprised to hear these words from you.

Sanctions are much much worse than destroying government infrastructure especially if casualties can be cut to zero. Sanctions hurt civilians, in bad ways.

I remember seeing the effects of the santions on Iraq years ago, it wasn't fun.

Also, if your idea of diplomacy is, "Stop or I will say stop again" then yes this is my answer to diplomacy.

Can't argue with logic. These rouge strikes by Israel on nations around it have been going on for some time - only unify the enemy force that surrounds Israel. These types of actions should signal war & coalition building to destroy Israel, and if Iran was serious it just missed a golden opportunity do that ~ but Israel will provide more opportunities as time goes on.

YES. I think Israel should do it...and probably will. They had success with this one.

I wish Israel no harm, I am just saying what is going to happen, and we should not be surprised when it does. It is a shame all of those people do not live in peace, and work towards peace together. Building the wall between Israel and Palistine was the best thing to happen. Israel should have a wall all the way around it - and keep their nose out of OPBS other peoples business.
