An independent border-watch group claims it demonstrated the nation's vulnerability by sneaking into the United States a fake weapon of mass destruction.
Two members of Arizona-based American Border Patrol, or ABP, carried a suitcase in a backpack from Mexico into Arizona July 19. The group said the men crossed a border fence then went to a house in Sierra Vista, Ariz., without detection. The event was captured on video, which is available on the group's website. "While the 'WMD' contained nothing but foam rubber, American Border Patrol performed the mission to demonstrate how a terrorist might bring a real WMD into the U.S.," the group stated. "We were careful in making this video to avoid giving terrorists any aid in performing a real mission," said Glenn Spencer, the group's president. Spencer emphasized his group "did not seek to embarrass the Border Patrol but to point out the need for more resources." "I mean, you have people with backpacks, bottles of water and zero training coming across," he said. "I just wanted to show how easy this is for somebody with training to come into this country." The paper said the Mexican government might file a formal complaint with the U.S. government. In a statement yesterday, American Border Patrol said its crew reports it may "inadvertently" have strayed a short distance into Mexico during the mission. Their intent, however, was to stay on the U.S. side, noting fences along the border are well inside U.S. territory. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/ar...TICLE_ID=39682 |

I am a bit conflicted over all this, on one hand I don't want strict immigration policies as most libertarians don't as well. But on the other hand, this is also a security problem. |

The few times I have listened to that O'reilly guy on FoxNews, I have heard him preach that we should have the military on the southern border (and probably the north -- to keep out the (*)(*)(*)(*) canadians) and to me it sounds like a no brainer. Of course, we will have to repeal the posse comitatus act, but that will give the Congress something to do now that their nifty gay marriage ban amendment is dead.

Another article with relevance to this issue:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/07/28/tex...est/index.html A possible terrorist enters the U.S. from mexico to texas, then, tries to use a bad passport to gain flight to new york. I guess we doesn't have many flashy targets here, but unless we beef up security at the border, my home state of Texas might become the second-choice target of a terrorist attack. The border needs to be secure and its somewhat shocking that people seem to be ignoring this issue. With all the talk about protecting the homeland, Bush seem to be leaving this important issue out.

Politicians won't touch this issue because of the twisted state of affairs our nation's in.
The Hispanic vote is an important demographic for politicians, but if anyone makes a move to really tighten border security, especially President Bush, then someone on the left will come out screaming OMG RACISM/DISCRIMINATION!!!1 I'm all for a tight border to deter drug smugglers/illegal aliens. The problem is people take it the wrong way and somehow mange to associate it with racism.
