I am 21, so I suppose I still qualify as a young person, but I never listen to rap. I am too Puritanical to stand the lyrics, though I don't judge others who can.

Kids listen to plenty of music types, not all of them listen to rap. According to Bombeni, rap isn't even mainstream.
The rap music you are talking about, is the 'gangster' type I mentioned. 50Cent made it popular, and now it is the dominant style, it is almost 'pop rap'. Most of the people who like it aren't real rap fans, they just like it because it is popular. I consider myself and real rap fan, and I don't like this style of rap, I do like some of 50's earlier stuff, but for the most part I agree with your description of it; similar, though decent, beats and lyrics that only talk about how great the rapper is and the crimes they have, and plan to, commit. Don't worry though, people will tire of the repetitiveness soon enough...

Doctiloques dear:
I remembered when I was little, I heard my father was listening to the big band, Nat King Cole, Billy holiday and luis Armstrong...in Taiwan in the 50s. American music accompany my childhood and teenage years and to this stage. Not until the 90's I started falling love with the music my father used to listen, I adore Billy Holiday's sweet and innocent voices, Armstrong's tough & magnetic low vocal, Beautiful lyrics from Nat king Cole...Natalie Cole's CD Unforgettable was in my car CD player for a long long time and my favorite song is Orange Color Sky. As far as I concern they are All our national treasures. Also some other artist Ilike to mention here and there are: Simon & Garfunkel, the Chi-lites, the Stylistics, the Elverly brothers, Petera & Gorden, Pete,Paul& Mary, Elvis, Dan Forgelberg, Steve Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Carol King, Hank Williams, Doris Day and Whitney Houston....the lemon sisters, the orange sisters, the Apple brothers.... |

jcwang - I've listened to a lot of music in my time, most of it varied enough to include just about every genre out there. Billie Holiday is one of my all-time favorite female voices but I'd never have described her as sounding 'innocent'. Too much heartache and too many tough times come through in those notes...but that's just me.
Me? I was listening to the Spamalot cast recording this morning and the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack this afternoon. Guess I was in a Tim Curry kind of mood. And, from what I've read about Tim, he would be proud to be mentioned in the same post as Billie
