Default Coffee Consumption Increases

I drink neither coffee nor soft drinks (I drink two cups of tea daily for a bit of caffeine), but since two people on the site chose their user names based on their liking for coffee, I thought this story might interest some:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - More Americans are drinking a cup of coffee every day, putting Java virtually neck-and-neck with such soft drinks as cola, according to an industry report released on Saturday.

Preliminary data from the National Coffee Association of USA's "2006 National Coffee Drinking Trends" showed the percent of U.S. consumers who drink coffee each day rose to 56 percent in 2006 from 53 percent in 2005 and 49 percent in 2004.

What is the sociological meaning of this?

I don't know. But I can tell you some things that I can infer from reading this.

1) People like coffee and soda.
2) People will have darker teeth.
3) People will become less active.
4) Dentists are going to get rich.

I'm addicted to coffee. It helps me get through the day. If I'm not drinking coffee, I'm drinking soda. I don't put sugar in my coffee and I drink diet soda so no worries about too much sugar.

I started this thread with caffeineaddict and JavaBlack in mind, but I see that there is yet another coffee addict on the site.

The terrible part is that pop and coffee, especially pop, contain a lot of calories but do not create fullness. As a result, I think pop in particular is a massive contributor to the obesity problem.
Hmmmm... Lots of sugar. Not filling. Doesn't quench thirst. Not enough caffeine to subdue an addiction headache. But (*)(*)(*)(*), I love a Coke every now and then.
But for me it's usually coffee. As the name infers black. And it seems the metabolic increase from the caffiene counters the hidden calories. But I actually prefer tea. When I get married, in addition to eating healthier and exercising, I intend to drink more tea and less coffee. But coffee is what they have at work.
