I have a BA in Political Science, with the credits for a minor in History but I didn't fill out the paperwork. I have been a keyboard jockey since '94. Started doing tech support for a computer manufacturer, but now do software deployments for a large corporation. I've been trying to decide whether to stay technical or to go back to management (I supervised a crew of techs at my old job) and maybe get an MBA. I'm looking for the security factor right now, because with 1 little one and another on the way, I'd like to worry about how I parent them, not how I'm going to feed them.

I'm a part-time ESL teacher and a full-time house husband. I recently passed the exam to be a school teacher and am waiting for a reply from the state to begin looking for a job as a HS teacher next September.

The best jobs often come by way of who you know, not what you know. The guy my husband just hired (though prior military) never gave much thought about working in the defense industry. He had no idea that he had anything to offer them. Through a mutual friend, my husband got his resume and gave him a telephone interview. They discovered that his computer skills dovetailed nicely with the kind of geek my husband was looking for. Voila! The guy gets a 15K a year raise and huge potential.
My point, Java is don't put limits your options. Don't fret too much about your first job. Your last job is what counts the most.

although I don't work for a bank, that is essentially what I do, commercial lending. I manage 9 sales people along with a credit analyst, documentation specialist and a personal assistant. Most of our customers are large companies in New England and sprinkled around elsewhere. I'd like to do something else, but it is hard to leave the security I have and I work for a well respected company. I plan to open my own business in the next two or so years, but am trying to discover exactly what that is going to be!

I'm currently a undergraduate student working on my Political Science and Philosophy majors. I plan on going to law school to learn international law, but I may be getting ahead of myself and have no idea how to pay for it.
Plus, I'm looking for a good summer internship in the Boston area, but I'm not too good at looking for such jobs. |

What's most important is getting your foot in the door. I got hired as a temp at a very low level manufacturing job out of college just to "get by" until I landed my "real job" and within 2 weeks had been promoted to the quality dept as a full time employee and a year later was doing process engineering. My mom had a degree in elementary education, started at the phone company as an operator and found herself in a programming position 10 years later. Being young, you have tons of options, it can be hard to get your foot in the door at first, but if you're smart and a hard worker, any good company will be glad to have you. If you feel passionately about pursuing your liberal arts focus (psychology? philosphy? history?) -- then yes, you simply aren't qualified to get a job in these areas without an advanced degree, and if you do, it will pay low and have a very low ceiling. |
