Default Sitting on top of a Gas Reserve

Several months ago, I promised that I might have some news soon and that I would share it with you IF it came to pass. Since the subject is related to something we've often debated on this site: slant drilling in ANWR. Well....apparently I'm going to be able to tell you from personal experience before long just how detrimental.....or non-detrimental...... "slant drilling" is. My neighborhood....and personal property.....is sitting on top of the nation's biggest "gas reserves".....called the Barnett Shale. We have been approached by a gas/oil company who are drilling on the property next to ours and they want to slant drill under our homes in my neighborhood. The slant drilling will be about 8500 feet below us. The gas is being piped up to Chicago and New York. So.....if it ends up not hurting me, my property, or my neighbors property, we can all put to rest the notion that it will harm caribou in Alaska. Will keep you posted. It will be some time yet before it all comes to pass.

Not millions. But it'll be a nice little windfall. They are estimating conservatively around $50,000 for each homeowner; possibly more. I'm hoping for the "more."

Are you kidding? For $50,000, they can put the drill in my front yard!

And that's for having 1/2 the mineral rights. If we had them all, we'd be getting twice that much.

I never thought I'd be involved in something like this.

I think you should use the money to establish a college scholarship program for the children of PoliticalForum's conservative moderators.

Good one.

Remember, Uncle Sam gets his portion. AND we don't get it all at once either. The bulk of it pays out over the first 3 years, they say.

I though conservatives hated institutions of higher education??? Anyway...make the kids pay for it themselves - they'll get a lot more out of the experience that way.

Default Have they figured out what to do with the smell???

Ever drive through southeast New Mexico, (Jal, Eunice, up to about Hobbs) some areas make your eyes water from the vapors that escape for pressure control!

Please keep us informed! Must be one of those new techniques, Bush keeps talking about? Funny he keeps insisting that oil exploration has changed drastically in the past 20 years. But here in oilfield country, according to most of the veteran oil workers, not much has changed in the last 30 years, when it comes to extraction though. Paperwork and such maybe, but these "techniques" are pretty much the same!

Oh well, $50,000 ought to buy plenty of nose clips!

There won't be any of that, Buck. Believe me.....the entire neighborhood has researched this extensively before we agreed. First of all....the actual well heads are pretty far from us. And the part that comes underneath us (8500 ft below us, actually)........because it's so far down and so small.

But we'll see. I'll give an accurate report of any negatives as we go along. I'll be able to tell you if it bothers my Bluebirds or not.
