I just bought Civ4, but I'm still trying to get used to it. I don't really understand all the added features concerning religions, but I think it will pretty cool once I know what I'm doing.

Do religions only offer differing benefits, or do they have drawbacks as well? Does your civilization have to have a religion, or can it be atheistic? If so, what benefits and drawbacks do they give to atheists? I've only played the older civ games, and I think I read that they decided to remove the "fundamentalism" government and "poison water supply" spy option after 9/11. |

Once you have religions established, your civ might also randomly create religious leaders (you can't create them, they just appear) who can perfrom a variety of functions, such as building a temple in one of your holy cities. Quote:
Like I said, I just bought it, and I'm not even halfway through my first civ (in hidnsight, it was a really stupid purchase as I really don't have the time to play much), so I'm still learning al the details myself. It all seems so incredibly complicated, so I really have no idea what I'm doing. It's fun, though. I think I remember MerlinX talking about civ4 a while ago in another thread. Quote:

Somehow Civ IV's gameplay had suffered. Many aspects of it felt more like work than fun. And it almost seemed like the game was "preachy" for lack of a better word. For example, it tends to penalize you for playing as a conqueror - by making rapid expanson all but impossible. Also, the Civilipedia Tech Tree quotes in this edition have a not-so-subtle anti-capitalist bias. A minor annoyance, but I think they should have kept politics out of it. More importantly though, I really liked the Baba Yetu song. But does that thing get stuck in your head or what? Quote:
Lately I've been splitting my gaming time between Neverwinter Nights 2 (Very good RPG; it would have been great except for its unsatisfying ending) and Bookworm Adventures (incredibly addictive word puzzle game).

Nowhere near as good, IMO; too much of a guided tour. CoD2 is a bit like that, as well, but the various scenarios were better and more interesting. CoD3 is much more of "take THIS sniper rifle and take out THOSE mortar crews." Plus things like bazookas that magically run out of ammo as soon as you destroy the last tank -- but have unlimited ammo until then.
And both have the *really* annoying "can only save the game between scenarios" feature. At least on Xbox.
