Anyone else catch that show about the battle of Thermopylae on the HistoryChannel? Good stuff.
heres an interesting bit I didn't know:Male warriors who die in battle and females who die during childbirth are the only Spartans given grave markers with names on it.

Whatever the case my be, I just hope they stick to mostly battles and not too much of the talking stuff. 'Alexander' was an incredibly chatty snooze fest topped off with showing whats his name's butt one too many times made it unbearable for me.. big disapointment that movie. That and the goofyass helmet Alexander wore Quote:
One thing I do have an issue with is the Hoplite warriors not wear chest armor in this movie. They were Heavy Infantry, which gave them great advantage against the persian Light Infantry.

The bullet-speed combat sequences do look really cool though. Here's a review of it - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/300/ - Not great, but not awful. They gave it a 62...Ghost Rider got a 26. |

Cool, let us know how it goes, Ivan. Although I'm already pretty sure the '300' will get the youngens all gungho to do battle with the persia err Iranians.

ick.. I dunno about that. But from what I've read about ancient sparta, it's a pretty alien society compared to the norms of the present. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartan_pederasty Sparta was, above all, a militarist state, and emphasis on military fitness began virtually at birth. Shortly after birth, the mother of the child bathed it in wine to see whether the child was strong. If the child survived it was brought before the elders of the tribe by the child's father. The elders then decided whether it was to be reared or not. If found defective or weak, the baby was left on the wild slopes of Mt Taygetos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparta After that the boys are sent to live with the older males to start military training at age 7... only at age 30 are they allowed to live with a wife. The whole ancient Greek society seemed kinda ummm, gay. Take this for instance: The Sacred Band of Thebes was a troop of picked soldiers, numbering 150 pederastic couples, which formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC. ...The reasoning behind the Sacred Band was that lovers would fight more fiercely and more cohesively at each other's sides than would strangers with no ardent bonds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Band_of_Thebes --------------- Quote:
