Default What's up with the UK?

Westminster Abbey? Huh? Dead bodies and stuff?

Black Pudding? Made from a quart of blood? Whaaaaaat???

Scotland - breaking away? Leaving two microstates? Still thinking about battles hundreds of years ago? Stupid, right?

Parliament? "Order order!" They shut up in the US congress when someone's speaking! Can't close your mouths?

British museum - lotsa egyptian crap? Give it back to egypt, maybe?

The London theaters? Firetraps - would be closed down in the US. Get some exits, huh?

And why don't you pronounce the "r"s? Don't be a arse, say the "r"s - speak english, for crissake.

I think it's pretty fun to watch. I may be more interested in politics here if it were as much exciting to watch our senators debate.

Maybe they'll give it back if we ever decide to give Pooh bear back.

Forgive me if i'm wrong, hav'nt I nullified you on this once before? England a great little Island where they have special dog leads for British mp's steadfast on maintaining the "transatlantic alliance". England-Bond Street, the premier for designer clothes, far better thatn Miami you-lick-ass or anywhere in N-Y. England, the place where we get to eat proper food, like Fish and Chips and Sunday Roast [a dish prepared with FRESH vedgetables and roast potatoes, along with a meat of your choice] Am I getting through here my fellow neo con. We live in a free, prosperous, multi cultural society and you live in a hotspot for terrorist attacks, very much like Gaza actually

I have to admit... If our congressmen acted like UK's parliament... C-Span would get awesome ratings and elections would have record turnouts... for better or worse.

Agreed. I love watching Prime Minister Minutes or whatever it's called -- the once-a-week thing where Blair goes to the House of Commons and is asked any question the MPs want to ask. He has a big briefing book with him, but he must respond pretty much off the cuff -- to applause, or catcalls, or whatever raucous response it brings.

It's an unvarnished look at government in action. Limited time means no (or few, anyway) droning speeches. And it seems as if you would really get a sense of whether your elected representatives have a clue. Love him or hate him, you have to respect Blair's intelligence and mental agility.

Default sad to say

What you are watching is what currently passes for British democracy in action. What you may be missing is the fact that most of the so called "big hitters" lie through their back teeth to get what they want or stay in power. So called free votes are becoming a thing of the past and MPs are usually forced to tow the party line.
Once upon a time politicians served the people, they now serve themselves. This is what the "Mother of all Parliaments" has become.
Have you ever tasted black pudding? It may sound disgusting but it tastes fantastic, try it!
Scotland is getting autonomy as is Wales and (Gawd help us) Northern Ireland, it is not the break up of the Union but the devolvement of power. On this subject I am pleased, I live in Wales and the benefits of having a Welsh assembly are beginning to show through already.
As far as the Egyptian artifacts go, no doubt Tony will soon be apologising to the world along with global warming (we had the industrial revolution after all) and the extinction of the dinosaurs (haven't quite worked out how it was our fault but I'm sure someone will think of something.
By the way, if you think of anything else FOR CRISSAKES WE ARE SORRY!

I have to admit that is the downside to parliamentary democracy. People essentially vote for a party rather than individuals. So it kind of makes sense that they have to tow the party line.

Lots of people here vote a straight party ticket.

This autonomy of such little bits of land looks bizarre to americans. Tell me one more thing - what dies this mean in Welsh?

True, but our chief executive is not the leader picked by the majority party.
