Thu Jul 26, 10:06 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Americans who feel bored and underpaid do work hard -- at surfing the Internet and catching up on gossip, according to a survey that found U.S. workers waste about 20 percent of their working day.

An online survey of 2,057 employees by online compensation company Salary.com found about six in every 10 workers admit to wasting time at work with the average employee wasting 1.7 hours of a typical 8.5 hour working day.

Personal Internet use topped the list as the leading time-wasting activity according to 34 percent of respondents, with 20.3 percent then listing socializing with co-workers and 17 percent conducting personal business as taking up time.
Hey, you guys don't have to feel so bad about posting here during work hours. Lots of folks are wasting time at the office. Waste on, my friends! Waste on!

At the same time they are mandating for higher wages and democrats succeed at it. We're just watching socialism devalue the American worker.

The deomocrats are mandating higher wages for those at the very bottom. I noticed that the article said most time was wasted on the internet. I don't think most minimum wage earners have access to computers or the internet for that matter....unlike some on PF.

I'm not sure that I believe that most of them don't have access. Unfortunately the article does not say that this factor was even examined in this study.

Tell me, what type of minimum wage jobs do you think that employees have access to the internet? The lowest wage jobs that I can think of, are data entry and telephone sales (not minimum wage jobs, btw) and I'm sure the IT department has oversight on what sites the employee goes in to or has access to.

The study was done by an organization called salary.com. So, the participants would be the type of people who would go to a website where you plug in fields on your job title, education, experience, and area where you live and come up with a benchmark salary that you should be making. So, we're talking about people whose level of sophistication is substantially above that of your average ordinary garden variety run of the mill minimum wage burger flipper.
