Go see it.

This is the opening salvo in a whole new Avengers franchise due to blossom in 2010. Thats when Iron Man 2 will be out, followed by Thor about a month later.

At the end of Summer 2010, the first Avengers movie will be out. The first one will basically center around Captain America.

It does sound pretty cool.
I have a hard time picturing Thor translated to the modern movie franchise since it's such a silly concept though... but Iron Man is almost possible in this day and age (except the miniaturization of the power source that could actually run the suit).

Yeah, the enemies in the movie are islamofascists. At one point, one of the American villains reminds the Islamofascist leader "the achilles heel of your part of the world has always been technology" heh heh...

It grossed 200 million in it's opening weekend, and 100 million domestic. Thats ninth highest of all time, and 2nd highest for a non-sequel - http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...oxoffice_N.htm -

By contrast, I think X-Men grossed $60 million.

Not necessarily...if it is an alloy. Iron Man's suit is made of a titanium/gold alloy, not iron.

Why do they call him Iron Man then?

1) original suit was iron thus iron man.

2) I loved the movie.

3) My wife who went with me had this to say:

Her " I knew that the Middle eastern guy would not be the bad guy in the end"
Me "how did you know?"

Her "Because the meta narrative would not allow for a middle easterner to be the smart one who can also build an "iron man" suit. It can't allow for us to view our enemies as equals"

My favorite version of the suit was the Maroon and silver version from the late 80s. I always thought the orange and yellow one looked kinda stupid. But they pulled it off well in the movie.
