TOTO is better than Yes, too. See how fair I am? As totally putrid as TOTO is, they are still heads and shoulders better than the fetid, reeking cess pool of music that is Yes.

Those are some excellent choices, many were in my list, and others I like a lot but wouldn't put among my very favorite. I do have to say I don't know Weather Report, Soft Boys, or Olivia Tremor control though!!

I am listening to frightened rabbit right now, very good!

I think The Sisters of Mercy sticks out for me because they are the most non-metal band that I have ever liked to the extent that I like them...
And strangely this seems to be common amongst metalheads. They've been covered by Cradle of Filth, Crematory, In Extremo, and Kreator at least.
And I don't believe any of us can explain WHY we like them.

I bet Stekim would hate them though...

We seem to overlap quite a bit, don't we?

Weather Report is really more of a jazz fusion/world beat band than anything else, but had one of the absolute best bassists of all time as well as really tight, inventive arrangements.

Robyn Hitchcock was the leader of the Soft Boys, and I guess he'd be considered somewhere between neo-psych and jangle.

Olivia Tremor control is neo-psych and is part of the elephant 6 collective that also includes Neutral Milk Hotel. Great music for aging hippies.

I'll have to check out frightened Rabbit. I've heard of them (probably through Pitchfork), so I should take a listen

thanks for the recommendation.

Well, you hate Depeche Mode and they are kind of pop-gothy stuff...
But then again metalheads like the Sisters for no discernable reason... so I guess maybe it's possible you'll like them... I just think it would be weird.

I also like Depeche Mode and cannot say why.

Good one!

I actually saw them before Partridge developed stage fright and they turned into just a studio band. It must have been around 1980 or so, and about the timr of Black Sea. They were playing in San Francisco at one of those old theatres converted to a music hall, and it seemed thatthe entire crowd was pogoing in unison Absolutely GREAT show.

It seems there are no hip hop fans out there, then?
