More Surgery!

My mum just called me with the news that I have a gastroscopy on the 7th of August. I've been waiting for a few months to have it, and finally, it's here. I cancelled the last appointment because it was only a month after my other surgery. At least they gave me time to prepare this time!

This one is just to have a look in my stomach and find out why my body doesn't absorb nutrients. I hate taking supplements, lol!

I had the same thing done a couple months ago. It's a breeze. You'll be fine.

I hear they sedate you before they put the tube down your throat...I'm just really scared I'll choke and won't be able to breath.

You'll be fine. A gastroscopy isn't surgery, it's a diagnostic procedure where they occasionally do some therapeutic work. I can speak with authority here - I worked in gastroenterology for five years and have watched several hundred of these procedures, plus had one myself.

It's a day case, you'll be out for about 45 minutes and then you'll wake up with (maybe) a croaky throat and some bloating (again maybe) and you'll get given some food and sent on your way!

Gastroenterologists routinely do 30-40 of these procedures every week. Don't you worry - you'll be fine!!

And oh yeah - you'll be sedated. It's not a general anaesthetic, but called a deep sedation. You won't remember anything and you'll be asleep, so you won't feel the tube going down your throat.

So they do put you to sleep? I need to be sure so I know how many days I should take off work - eithor one or two.

Oh okay, so it's basically asleep but not asleep, right? Thank goodness, I was worried I'd choke or something.
