Why do you use so many paper plates? Is it a finance thing or is it laziness or is it cos you don't have potteries? I don't get it!

Paper plates are cheap, functional, disposable, and biodegradable. Unfortunately, their manufacture means they damage our planet more than washing dishes does. (And here's something many don't know: washing dishes in a dishwasher is better for the environment than doing them by hand.)

I recycle my paper plates, I clean them in the potty and reuse them. I don't charge my guests extra for the remaining trimmings still left on the plates.

The first time I found out that Americans eat off paper plates with regularity I was stunned beyond words. It's something I cannot fathom. In Australia we eat off paper plates at picnics, and maybe occasionally at a barbeque. That's it.

It still completely spins me out.

Is it really, truly the norm there?
