No, I'm not a smoker, but I have several family members who finally kicked the habit.
One of them said her doctor gave her some sedatives to take for 5 straight days. All she did was sleep and drink water and go to the bathroom. According to her, this "flushed" all of the nicotine out of her system. Having smoked for 10 or so years, she kicked the habit and hasn't smoked since (must've been 15 years ago now). My other relative just stopped--I know it's not much help to smokers, but according to him the idea of an addiction is baloney. Once kids started coming to his house, he had to quit for their sake and he just flat out stopped smoking cigars after 20 years. Not sure if that helps, but good luck! It's one of the best things you can do for yourself.

You have to decide that you're quitting for yourself. You can't do it for anyone else. My suggestions:
Make some rules to follow that make smoking less easy. 1)Don't smoke in the car. 2)Don't smoke in the house (esp, at the computer). When you have to go outside and just stand there doing nothing, you realize how much time smoking takes up. You'll cut down a lot then. Be prepared to gain weight. You're a man. You can handle it. Have lots of munchies around. Mints. Nuts. Eat. Who cares? If you need exercise... didn't you say you're trying to have a baby? Be prepared to sleep. a lot. You will find yourself going to sleep just sitting on the couch watching TV. You already do the patches and the gum, huh? Do you take the patch off at night? My mom cut her patches into smaller squares as she got less dependent. What ever you do, don't smoke with one on. Also, I know a lot of people who say, "it gets easier everytime I quit." Sooner or later, though, they stay quit. So, don't get discouraged. Remember every one you don't smoke is one you don't smoke. That does make sense! Last and probably most effective. Pray.

BTW, I'm dying to tell somebody!
My daughter got her acceptance letter to TAMU today. My son is there now, so next year I'll be a Double Aggie MOM!

Of course, I agree. But even teasips grow up. Barney-fife used to be a liberal hippie teasip. Now, he's one of our forum buddies.

I have smoked for more than half of my life (so far). I am in the middle of trying to quit. This topic is eerily timely.
Wed.: 1 in AM, another on drive to work. No more until I started my commute home. I can rationalize, or perhaps be truthful, but I was having a hard time driving. I felt dangerously lightheaded. bought a pack. Thurs: 1 on drive in, one before lunch. WHY?!? I was doing ok, so WHY? Cuz it was there, and that's what I do. One after lunch, see above. Two late PM, none in car. A few at home. Friday: 2 on the drive in. It's 10 AM. Reasons to quit: 4 kids at home, three in diapers (twins and toddler). Life in$urance is needed. Health. Spend more time with 4 kids, not so much in my cave (garage). The desire to not wake up feeling kinda crappy, then having the morning smoke and feeling really crappy. The co$t. The Aggies suck. OK, I'm just a little tense, sorry. This weekend, no driving. Hope that lots of busywork to keep occupied, but that could backfire on me. (take down Christmas lights? Ok, jus' let me light up to assess the situation...) Oh, be careful with the docs drugs. I don't know all of the facts (the guy is pretty private) but a coworker got the dope from the doc, totally effed him up. He ended up in the hosp and on (short-term) disability. Anti-anxiety pills don't mix with him chemical makeup. First thing the doc said to him after his reaction, "Keep smoking." Seriously. I don't inhale very deep, the nicotine should be easy for me to beat. Where's that "hope" smilie... The habit will be ubertough. |
