Default American Idiot

was the best album I bought this year. And I buy a lot of them. I never really understood the "corporate rock" angle. Like somehow you are "selling out" if more than a certain number of people buy the album. How is it Metallica's fault that the black album sold 14 million copies, for example? Should they have pulled it off the shelf when it hit 300,000? The fact is, acting, writing and making it in a band are some of the hardest things in the world to be successful at. Lots of great actors, writers and artists never make it. On the flip side, lots of horrible actors, writers and artists make it huge. Can you explain Britney Spears? I know I can't. Life is not fair. Sometimes (like with Green Day) a great album sells a lot of copies. Good for them. Sometimes a great album doesn't.

Default ahem...

I mentioned them, not someone else.

I think what creates the concept of a corporate band is a band that is pretty mediocre that has a heavy duty marketing effort behind it....

BUt on the flip side, alot of people would consider Creed a corporate band because they have that heavy mass-produced rock sound and have sold millions of records, but they sold their records by letting their fans download them freely, and rejected the major labels to sign with a small independent label...

http://www.x1015.com/is/creed.html

I'm not a huge fan of creed, but I think that they show that if a band has a sound that fans like, corporate support isn't necessary for success.

Default I am loving my velvet revolver CD...

I keep pushing it on my co-worker, and i am completely surprised that she is unmoved when I say they sound like a cross between GNR and STP. Not everyone can have my good taste in music, apparently.

Fall to Pieces, though...i love a power ballad...

Default Im just as shocked as you are.

Velvet Revolver IMO is the best band to come out of this millenium. Personally Fall To Pieces is near the bottom on that album for me. It's a wicked song that has been weakened by its repetetiveness just like many GNR songs were, Paradise City, Welcome to the jungle.

btw who's STP?

Default STP

Stone Temple Pilots. Where Scott Weiland came from (hence their sounding like a STP/GnR combo).

Great album - I had it on the other day while I was cleaning. I think I had forgotten how good it was as I don't listen to it very often. That's going to change though, I'm pretty sure.

Default To be honest,

I don't listen to *corporate* radio much (all the local radio stations here are now apparently owned by Clear Channel and they all have national morning shows instead of the far funnier local guys they used to have) so I haven't really gotten burnt out on any of Velvet Revolver's songs...though my favorite song on the album is the 10th song, can't remember what it's called.

I primarily find new music through friends or through listening to launchcast on yahoo instant messenger which you can tailor to suit your listening preferences.

I can't think of anyplace else where I can listen to a social distortion fan station or a seether fan station, for instance. So that's what I listen to most of the day at work.

Or my own station lol...on launchcast i mean.

I just bought the new NIN cd and am REALLY liking it though. The new System of a Down CD is also good (albeit somewhat inconsistent) but not particularly work friendly.

Default The Velvet Revolver CD

is great. Every song is good. The new System of a Down is not as good as their last one, but that generally happens when you do the whole "double album" thing. Hypnotize comes out in September and I bet if you combined the best from Mesmerize and Hypnotize you would have one great album! Like the Use Your Illusion stuff from Guns and Roses. Those albums could have been combined to make one kickin' album. Instead we get two good ones. (Shrug)

Default Ooo...I am really remiss, speaking of double albums

in not saying something about the new foo fighters cd(s). Now THAT is how a double album should be done...two cds, 10 songs each, packaged together. One is probably their hardest rock album, the other one is almost totally acoustic. I am not in love with EVERY song on either CD but there is plenty of good music on both and I love how well they treat their fans by giving us more.

ON THE FLIP SIDE, however, I DO NOT LOVE the security protocols they've put in place on that album. That sucks.

SUCKS BIG TIME. You have to download licenses to your pc to play the music, and then, when I allowed two friends to borrow the CDs just to listen to them, they would not play on their PCs. Bogus.

but still a worthy album for discussion. I agree with your assessement of SOAD, stekim. I like BYOB, Cigaro and the second hollywood song on the album but there is alot of filler on there, too.

NIN, on the other hand, is one I like all the way through.
