Default Your favorite comic book hero(es)?

I remember as a young kid I loved reading comics. I didn't understand most of it, but they had some pretty pictures.

Anyway, my favorite has always been Captain America. He's like a more modest and conflicted version of Superman, plus you've gotta dig the shield.

Default comics

I loved Superman and Batman, Green Lantern, also the Fantastic Four and the Hulk. I used to trade comic books with neighbors when i was a kid. And of course there was Mad magazine. I still remember some of the stories from the early 60s.

Default Alternatives

I never really dug Superman; I just couldn't root for a guy who was invincible. Spiderman was my favorite as a kid.

When I hit high school, I got into alternative comics. My first favorite remains my lasting favorite: Cerebus. Mage was a close second.

As far as mainstream, while I still enjoyed Spiderman, I harbored a real weakness for the Punisher and Daredevil. the Dark Knight books were good, too.

My comics collection is currently sealed in mylar in my basement, hopefully gaining value daily. I sold my Aliens comics in the mid-90s to pay off some debts, but otherwise the collection is intact.

Default fav

I understand about Superman's invincibility, but I still got off on it. He had some vulnerabilities, like magic and Kryptonite.

Of course, later in the 60s I got into underground comics, like the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Those were cool.

It never occurred to me to save any of these comics. Oh well.

Default Comic Book Heroes

I didn't own many comic books when I was younger, but I ALWAYS loved Wonder Woman and wanted to be her when I grew up; she was SO cool. Then I discovered X-Men, and Wonder Woman took a back seat; I still watch reruns of the cartoon when it comes on. The Beast always was and always will be my favorite-- intelligence is a major turn-on for me-- he had the strength but usually only resorted to using it AFTER he used his brain. He was followed closely by Professor X (again, smart guy) and Storm (I didn't see too many positive characters who were brown-skinned, and when I found them, I grew attached. Plus, she could control the weather-- how freakin' awesome is THAT?)

Default Child of the 70's?

Reminds me of the black superheroes of the 70's.. It was a rule back then that all black superheroes had to speak jive, and always had to have their race be the first part of their name... Black Lightning... Black Vulcan... Black Panther...

Still, that was progress back then. The first black superhero to appear in Marvel comics was named "Whitewash"

At least the writers stayed away from stereotypes when they created these characters:
Quote:
Black Lightning
A former Olympic athlete, Jefferson Pierce returned to his old neighborhood (the notorious Suicide Slum in the proud city of Metropolis) to become a teacher. Appalled by the violence he saw, he tried to intervene on behalf of his students, but quickly learned that the local mob objected violently to interference. A family friend, whose brother was a tailor specialising in superpowered clients, suggested an alternative: and Pierce donned a mask, an Afro wig, a hip way of talking, and an outfit that gave its wearer electrical powers to become Black Lightning, defender of the poor and underprivileged.

"Sgt.Rock" and "The Haunted Tank" were my favorite comics as a kid. That was fun reading.. a WW2 tank crew with the ghost of confederate general Jeb Stuart as their guardian angel. They kicked nazi-butt bigtime!

I never got into thights & spandex wearing superheroes... something about wearing their underwear on the outside didn't appeal to me
