Such as?

BTW, there seems to be some confusion about what behavioral profiling is and does. Also, behavioral profiling isn't a magic bullet which does it all. A multi-layered defensive/offensive program to combat terrorism is the best plan for protecting our citizens with minimal encroachment upon the civil liberties which make America such a great country.

A detailed paper about various factors in making behavioral profiling more effective: http://www.springerlink.com/content/.../fulltext.html

Obviously there are some procedures and information which are confidential so as not to give terrorists an education on what to do or not to do.

thats the thing

profiling encroaches on such a fundamental principle of america

to allow this kind of profiling is to step back in time

to rewind civilization as a response to radical terrorists

you have to ask yourself, has profiling every worked?

has it ever been looked back upon as something that was acceptable?

how did profiling communists work?

how many countless innocents were accused and blacklisted to further political goals

Samir,

you are missing where DW is coming from. His "behavioural" profiling is non-racial, or is "supra-racial". To pick a concrete example, he's talking about a policy which would have disregarded the fact that Umar Abdulmutallab is a Muslim, but would have highlighted his name to security because he was a young man making an unprecedented journey on a one-way ticket without baggage - that sort of thing.

I've got my reservations about that approach. It is a zero-sum game; any attention paid to somone the computer deduces to be high-risk is attention diverted away from the run-of-the-mill traveller. I think it's a fine strategy against e.g. smugglers, because in that case you can allow a few through the net in the interests of catching a greater proportion of targets eventually, over a longer period. But I'm a bit wary of coming down too hard on either side of that question, since it is a technical matter best addressed by those wo deal with security as a profession. I don't see any human rights issue in "behavioural profiling" as it is presented here.

Agreed, which is why it is only one means of improving security and eliminating the threat.

If we are going to win this war, we need to be smarter than the enemy. Knee-jerk reactions like considering all Muslims guilty until proven innocent will only make our job harder.
