Default Ulster

Funny thing is I live in Ulster, in the Republic of Ireland.

I await the World's refutations......

You live in the United Kingdom

I will leave you with this thought...

Please try again when you can find another 500,000 Ulster men and women who wish to join the Republic - then and ONLY then you might just squeaze into the Republic - until then you are British and carry a Britsh passport!

But surely, kind Nawbut, in order to ascertain which, of the remaining two counties of Republican Ulster, is your stomping-ground I need only obtain your answer to one more guess.

Are you sure that your logic, in the matter of these islands, is not as poor as your maths (or your Irish)?

Tá se sin contrailte! Deirfinn 'beirt' sa gcás seo, i nGaeilge dhílis mo cheantairse. (the posessive case here is vernacular as well - none of that 'mo gceantar fhéin' stuff for us!)

You will just never get it, will you Britons. We are one step ahead at all times - you presume that I would tell you, on your next guess, whether you were right or wrong.

We dont go in for showy, triumphalist displays.

With the hints of dialect you will now need no more guesses....Tír Chonaill Abú!

Default Bhí an bua ag Eoin ar Chonall!

Beirt daoine ach dhá rud.

That is Standard Irish.

Of course, you are perfectly free to speak whatever Godforsaken primitive provincialism you choose but all I actually hear is that banjo music off the movie `Deliverance`.

Have you forgotten your history? Connall lost. Brits come out on top again.

(*)(*)(*)(*)! (*)(*)(*)(*)! (*)(*)(*)(*)! I hadn`t thought of that.

Graciousness in defeat is a very British trait. I don`t share it.

Default Eoin was a Briton?

Nah, he came out of our country as well - we were beaten by our own. This doesnt make it 'ok'. We got them back though, (this does).

Standard Irish - would you have us saying 'dom'? The Gaelscoileanna have a lot to answer for!

But you are broadly right about 'beirt' being primarily used in reference to people. The exceptions in usage are usually in reference to a 'pair' - 'tá dhá chean fagtha' is rendered 'tá beirt fagtha' almost as an act of abbreviation in this instance. But its highly specific in how its used in this context; one would never say, for example, 'tá bheirt eitleáin lán Polonium 210 i Heathrow'.

That would just be ridiculous....

Default Haaaail, Brittanniaaaa!

I'm no fan of margaret thatcher, but screw argentina. Britain needs to get off it's ass, stop being so politically correct and implement social programs to increase birthrates, to support larger armies. Then, go back to conscription and start reconquering the Empire.

And by the by, no this does not mean staying in Iraq.
