Default What do you think will destroy humanity as we know it?

Hope no one already asked this.

I'm heavily into the Grey Goo Hypothesis, in which nanobots run amok and kill people at whim! Another possible cause is that Hillary Clinton wins the 2008 election and the Hands of God(s) get so p***ed off that he/she/it/they destroy the known universe. Ouch!

You forgot the most likely scenario: That the Great Old Ones will return to this world and devour all in their path.

Default Hey Folks

Nice poke about the zombies. Quick question. Who here has seen the original Dawn of the Dead and loved it? That...is a fantastic movie. My favorite movie of all time actually. The whole idea of the dead coming to life and devouring the living is such a great fictional genere. I met many of the guys too. I met George Romero, I met Tom savini, Joe Pilato. Didn't get to meet any of the Dawn of the dead cast though. ah ha well. Didn't like George's last one that much though. It was dissapointing.

I don't know what the proximate cause will be, but the signs of impending apocalypse are all around us.

Last night, for instance, CNN devoted an hour or so of prime-time broadcasting to Larry King interviewing Dr. Phil about the Alec Baldwin case.

I think the steady attrition of our critical thinking skills will lead to mass, slow death by stupidity. Alternatively, we'll simply devolve into nonsentience, having lost the minimum brain capacity for self-awareness.

At which point, our cats will eat us.

A good point, but I don't think it'll be the death of us.

What I was thinking is that the constant changes in our environment is what will eventually kill us off. We have more or less removed ourselves from the natural order of the selective process. As our environment does continue changing, we will have no hope of biologically adapting to it, and thus wont have a chance surviving.

I don't think We'll kill ourselves because the people who control nuclear weapons are too rich to risk losing it. I'm not saying Nukes will not be used in war in the future, it's lightly probable. It's hard to say though. I think the world is going to come into another dark age some time where economies don't work and there's no governmentbut the destruction of the human race and not just the world as we know it is a lot harder to do. I believe societal integrity will be destroyed before we are. Apparantly the world is heading towards barbarism, anti-nationalism. The actual destructiong of us humans will probably be done by something out of our control, at least at the moment it happens anyway. it's possible because of turmoil, most humans will die out from disease and starvation before humanity is completely ended. This can only happen if Global Order is paralyzed. So I'm guesssing we'll go merrily along until the masses become fed up with the leadership detachment and their hardships bringing instability. Once this happens, the sustaining of life for so many people will be impossible and people will starve. Some people will survive of course in remote areas with few where they can fish or whatever. Something then will have to come along and destroy them like a meteor or a globally resident poisonous bug. That's the best rationale I can give. To take a guess, looking at the pace we're going, It's hard for me to see civilized society lasting for more than two thousand more years.
