Default what is your opinion

I am a prior service Marine with a problem. I have never been political at all but recently became engaged to a girl who has a father that is vastly Democrat. We have had discussions about politics and I have seen myself torn between right wing and left. I want to vote McCain but see myself going to Obama if it comes down to it. Some of my research about McCain has come up with me going left. Do any of the negative views hold any weight?

What matters is what is important to you. Your issues. Don't use other people's opinions in place of your own. Go to votesmart.com and see how they've voted on the issues you deem most important.

Looking at longterm issues is good too. Supreme Court justices stay in office for a long time. Look at their decisions and ask yourself is you would rather have another Ginsburg, another Scalia or maybe another Thomas. If you like Ginsburg, vote democrat; if you don't, vote republican. Pretty simple really.

My problem is that I vote based on military preference but I know from experience that is not the right way. I want a canditate that is best for the country as a whole.

Default Mark,

Simply research both candidates yourself (in other words..go find the info..Don't rely on talk radio, this forum, newspapers solely) Use them as part of your overall search. Once you are satisfied that you know enough about both, then simply decide on who you think represents your view the best.

Vote as a Liberal (if you believe Liberalism is the right way) or vote as a Conservative (if you believe that is the right way) Do not get caught up with the labels DEMOCRAT or REPUBLICAN coz if you do, then you will be putting your political party before your beliefs or even your country.

Don't be afraid to vote for a Republican (if you are a Dem) or vise versa if you believe that individual is worth of your vote.

I think all candidates who run for POTUS want what they think is best for the country. The difference is how they achieve those objectives and that is where the discussions should lie...

Good Luck to you..

Ah, but not only the issues. The buttering, the dirt, the people's reactions, the economics of the campaigns, the vision of the candidates, all the history - for God sake's the history.

If you can raise specific issues, we can debate.

Its a opinion thing, every candidate has their baggage, personally I think Obama is the best choice between him and McCain. Cutting taxes and lowering government spending isn't going to change the direction of our country, all it does is gets the candidates votes. Staying in Iraq isn't a great idea at all either, but seeing how you have been in the military it is a different situation for you.
