I understand what you mean by a 'democracy' but the US is not actually a democracy. And we are fortunate it is not.

We live in a Representative Republic, technically. The US can also be regarded as a Constitutional Republic, but we still rely on representation and not democratic rule. Either way, it's not a true democracy. Our Founding Fathers were wise men.

It's semantics, but you're probably thinking of "direct democracy" A representative republic is considered one of the subsets of "democracy".
