There are already homeless shelters.
Affordable public transportation should be good enough.
I'm alright with welfare and food stamps type programs as long as they have conditions, are temporary, and are set up to get people to work. Things like transportation, education, and child care can supplement this... as long as the goal is to make them self-sufficient rather than dependent.
Of course for the old and disabled, there should be another standard... but that should be covered by a social security program.

Default economic preferences

here is the issue i think and alot of people dont really get at the heart of it. That is that ideally some type of socialism ideally would be best freedom and redistribution at the same time so preference should often be that of sharing and keeping but practically is where the decision becomes tough.

raw capitalism is thought to be the best... but in truth America is not raw capitalistic... we're not even a free market economy... we're a mixed economy

so this poll, im sorry to say, is bogus... because we are not a pure capitalist country, nor communist or socialist

Mixed is different from free market capitalism

Free market capitalism is where the government has no effect on the economy... a great example of this is Dubai... but here in America the government puts strict rules on businesses, they put taxes, they help out hurting companies, they crush monopolies... the list goes on and on

We have the strongest and most vibrant economy on earth, it needs to not only stay that way, but become even stronger

Capitalism easily.

This nonsense that everyone deserves equal pay or just in essence, making everyone equal is stupid. Capitalism allows for the American Dream if you really want it, really strive for it. Individualism is the key.

Life isn't equal.

In general no. I could see where it could be helpful temporarily to give vouchers for transportation as part of a welfare program that gets people to work.
Is that a yes or a no?
I think the question's too simple. Most of the problems are not with what is done, but how.

I'm for a reformed market economy liberated from the chains of usury! Communism and state socialism are roads to misery while capitalism in its current form isn't free of faults either. One of the greatest problem is probably the class of parasites which feeds purely on the labor of others and contributes nothing. Another problem with the current form of capitalism is that money by means of interest can "grow" ad infinitum, but since unlimited growth in an limited system is impossible, a possibility for such an impossible "growth" can only lead to misery and instability, a recipe for continual disaster!

I'm against any form of welfare because in the end it comes down to nothing but subsidized dysgenics! Only humans are foolish enough to think of means which weaken their own species as something beneficial that should be subsidized!

That would possibly be true if it actually had to do with genetics. But most of it is socialization and an uneven playing field.
And it's not actually foolish in that the altruistic social mentality humans have has been more successful than if we were all rabid solitary predators. That's why it comes natural to us. It's helped us survive.

Other!

I like rabid solitary predators. Got a nice ring too it!

If we are going to live with this delusion of only the strong survive, we might as well put it into play and see how many on the top of the food chain could actually dominate the landscape!

If I were a betting man, I'd suspect those at the top of the modern food chain would fail miserably if they had to depend on all their human attributes to survive!
