You are incorrect, per google the phrase mostly unique comes up with over 3 million hits making the use of the phrase not so unique. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

I always tip, but it will vary on the service. Some where between 10-20%

1. Bad service? small tip. But it has to be *really* bad. I've never left zero tip, except when I was in college and broke.

2. Average service? 15-20%.

3. Excellent service? Whatever I think it's worth above 20%.

That's in restaurants. As a rule, I don't tip in other situations where some people do -- grocery baggers, for instance. Call it a quirk, but I'd rather bag my own groceries than tip someone to do it.

I tip directly based on my perception of the service that I received. 15% is the standard if I "have nothing to complain about." If the server goes out of his ORR HERR way to make the service better, I might go as high as 25%, depending also on other factors. If I grow to hate my waiter more and more as the night progesses, I ain't givin' that schmoe a dime.

I'm surprised there isn't a "Always tip but a variable amount" option.

Which is what I am. I suppose I might not tip if the witstaff pissed me off. But they know they're working for tips and I've never had a bad situation.

Sometimes I'll also tip higher if I know I or my wife is being a pain (my wife is a bit picky so sometimes I'll have to work the poor waiter through a whole list of substitutions).

I don't think I should feel obligated to give a tip because they see it as part of their income. That makes it feel like I'm giving them handouts because I feel sorry for their pitiful income. Tips should be a reward for above average service.

I tip what I think they deserve, almost always something though, usually around 15% or so.

Their pitiful income comes from their employer. Why not help them out a bit to not have such a pitiful income?

What would such an above average service look like?
