This is something that has always intrigued me. We learned in school about the Universe, and that it supposedly expands and contracts. Then my question is this. What the hell is beyond the Universe?

how the heck can anyone answer this with any certainty? someday we will see 'beyond' and maybe we are initially doing so (I am unsure right now) but if we were I'd think I'd remember hearing about it.

does anyone remember what the latest is on this looking out to the edges of the universe?

I think all we need to do to see if the universe ends is this: Get a heap of astronauts and put them on a space rocket thing. Send them up into the sky, so they go straight up. We wait for them to come back and tell us if the universe ends.
If they don't return within the year we can only assume they are still travelling, and therefore the universe probably doesn't end at all.

How about that?

Does that include an infinite amount of mass? If yes, I would have to disagree.

But to the OP, who the (*)(*)(*)(*) knows. I like to think that there's an infinite amount of universes, each with it's own distinct laws of nature.

im picturing an infinite number of planets and stars and galaxies,
spreading outward over all imaginable space.
