It's the student's responsibility to learn and to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to them.

So I voted other.

The parents

My parents taught me to
- read and right.
- how to tell right from wrong
- be responsible and do my homework
- work hard to get ahead

I have done the same for my kids.

AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!! I forgot that option! But its up to the parent to ensure that the student understands this concept. Most people who are publicly educated will not come to the same conclusion as you have if it werent for their parents. The education and upbringing of your son or daughter is ultamtly your responsibility as a parent. What elts are caring parents for?

I wouldn't worry; I don't think many other people are going to vote like that. The thing is that I've taken responsibility for my own education through my extremely libertarian beliefs in personal responsibility and achievement by taking the opportunities available to me.

And the result is that I'm better educated than 99% of the people my age.

Personal responsibility for ones success = SUCCESS

i chose 'society'.
its in everybodys best interest for children to be educated.
so everybody has to be involved.
the government, the parents, the students, and of course the taxpayers.
everyone needs to get focused on making education better.

I voted "their parents," though I agree with the sentiment above; we all need to do more to improve public education. Still, as parents are supposed to be responsible for their children, they should be the ones who make sure their kids go to school and strive to do their best.

Teachers can only do so much (with shrinking budgets and growing class sizes).

It's up to both the parents and the school.
You send your kids to school to learn, don't we? We also teach our kids at home.
If someone's kid can't read even though are passing grades at school, then the school has some fault because they obviously shouldn't be sending kids up grades when they can't even read, but parents have to be pretty stupid not to know their kids can't read or write.

I mean we have had people here sue schools because the kid can't read and the parents didn't even know, supposedly. Some people are just so dense.

However, I believe it is their parents' responsibility to impart them with a work ethic, integrity, and respect for education and knowledge. By the time they're old enough to start paying for school, deciding what their long term interests are, etc--you're (*)(*)(*)(*) right the kids are responsible.
