I picked nuclear, hydro, wind, and tech research.
I'm open to drilling for more oil, but mostly view it as a waste.

Our primary short-term focus should be on making coal cleaner or eliminating it as a fuel source, as that will have the greatest impact on reducing carbon output.
If we go nuclear I think we also need to MANDATE the technology for recycling waste.

Eventually we should work toward fusion. I think we should join up with the French in their research on it.

Whichever one of those that is the least harmful to the environment, and the one we are going to get the most use out of.

Ideally what you probably want is a mix of nuclear, hydro, and wind.
Hydro is awesome, but only works in certain areas. Wind is great in some places... but to depend entirely on it would require way too many turbines and would be implausible. But it's a good supplement, especially for rural areas.
Nuclear is clean... if you ignore the waste. But according to some links from posters on this site, there are ways to recycle waste and we should continue seeking better ways to destroy it.

Once we figure out fusion... then we'll be home free on the clean energy thing.

We should use a conglomeration of wind, solar and the current nuclear power plants available.

I'm going to use an analogy I heard someone else:

If we went back in time 100 years and asked a farmer what would make farming more effecient and he'd likely say he wants an Ox that eats less food, works more and can plow on his own. He's have never thought to say a tractor.

The next great innovation may be something that no one has ever stopped to consider.

Everything except liquid coal and bio fuels.

Liquid coal is simply a proposal for replacing oil, when it could be used more efficiently for electric power in its solid state. Bio-fuels take up land that could be used for food or they burn food crops directly. Neither should be supported if the interest is in cheap energy. But that's basically the question with energy. Which is the most efficient, the cheapest way to get energy?
