I took the poll!! I would say that it was decently accurate. Economically I am center, and socially I am libertarian! So it is not bad!

The Political Compass

Economic Left/Right: -0.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.54

I've taken those tests before and I think they are biased and inaccurate.

As you'll see when my introduction thread posts, I don't know what I am right now. A part of me is very libertarian even anarchist, but I am really not sure if I trust that side fully right now. I'm beginning to think I'm just being cynical.

For instance, a part of me thinks it's horrible that people in my country don't want to get taxed a bit more so that everyone can have free health care... yet another part thinks the only thing worse than HMOs would be giving the power over health care over to the crooked politicians of the "right" and "left".

A part of me thinks voting is an utter waste of time, and another part thinks that not voting is a huge part of the problem.

A part of me is even radical enough that it thinks that laws make people morally lazy (I have good philosophical reasons for this if anyone wants top know them... not saying I know I'm right, just that I'm not totally nuts). Another part understands why people want to be protected from the "criminal element".

I am very confused about what I think right now.

They are mostly for entertainment.
I think Political Compass at least gives you a ballpark figure. A Republican is not going to get high negative scores.

I used to be more anarchistic. I think anarchy and libertarianism are very consistent from a philosophical point of view... but once mixed with reality, they start to fall apart. Reality isn't so philosophical.
So you probably are a bit cynical... but you probably have reason to be.

Yeah... That makes sense.
You just have to weigh those two things and decide which of them can more likely be fixed.
Personally I think we will sooner tame the government than get selfish people to act altruistically. We can at least see a semi-competent government some of the time.

Voting is a waste of time because people don't vote. If you give in to the cynicism you become part of the problem.

I've had similar thoughts... but like I said- philosophy and reality don't always line up.
Sure laws can make people morally lazy.
But without laws, the morally active have nothing to defend them from the people who are still morally lazy (or immorally active). You end up with far less morality where laws are not enforced.

In reply I'll just say that one of my big concerns for the US is that they system has been so twisted as to be actually irreparable.

And if anyone's afraid I'm gonna pick up a gun and start shooting politicians, I'm not. I am not a pacifist in the sense that I believe violence is always wrong, but I am in the sense that I believe it is always wrong for me.

Would you take the political compass test? I want to see how close everyone who considers themselves a Constitutional conservative is.

It's here: http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

I find it extremely ironic that many of those who claimed that Bush was the worst president in history claim that Obama is possibly the greatest thing to ever happen. If it is policy you are concerned with, then Obama is simply more of the same. More spending, more deficit, more foreign involvement, more government intervention, and more government regulation. Only a true partisan would claim that Obama represented change as the only change is the party he's from.

Even that test seems somewhat bias as per the general questions they ask.

Oh, I know that. But comparing results from different people still gives a reliable result to relative positions. The particular questions on that test have a pretty liberal bias, but it's better than many other ones that I've seen.
